Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and § 7407(d).

Certification. All applicants must be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) for one or more of the following categories: Radiography (R), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT).

Completion of a full‑time diagnostic radiologic technology program of at least 24 months, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or by other accrediting agencies recognized by the Department of Education.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Graduate DRTs are creditable if the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed a certification examination.

Part‑time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to the full‑time workweek (e.g., one week of full‑time credit for each two weeks of half‑time work).

Experience credit is available only for work earned after completion of basic certification requirements.

Specialized assignments (e.g., mammography, diagnostic ultrasound, interventional radiology, quality management) are creditable if performed as a DRT under a recognized certification.

Clinical competency must demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with current radiologic technology practice.

Grade determination for this vacancy is GS‑10. Experience requirements: at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position, and assignments of significant scope, complexity, and variety performed at least 25% of the time.

Technical KSAs: knowledge of radiation protection standards, advanced imaging software, basic physics of X‑ray production, positioning, exposure techniques, and specialized modalities (CT, MRI, IR). Maintenance of BCLS (basic cardiac life support) certification.

Duties

Serve as a Diagnostic Radiology Technologist for Imaging Service at the JJPVAMC, performing routine to moderately complex radiographic and MRI examinations.

Operate diagnostic digital X‑Ray equipment (DR radiographic, DR fluoroscopic, and DR chest radiographic units) and perform imaging studies with or without enteric contrast material.

Provide 24/7 coverage, including weekends and holidays, and respond promptly to procedure requests or instructions.

Prepare contrast materials under radiologist direction and perform upper and lower GI tract examinations.

Ensure accurate patient identification (ID band, request, and right/left markers) and obtain patient cooperation.

Perform radiographic exams at bedside and in operating rooms, including digital fluoroscopy during surgical procedures.

Practice radiation safety: use lead aprons, gloves, shields, and proper collimation; wear film badges; adhere to radiation regulations and participate in quality assurance activities.

Maintain and clean equipment, accurately record studies in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and the Health Information System (HIS) interface, and use CR/PACS for image transmission.

Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; provide high‑accuracy positioning and exposure techniques.

Work professionally and cooperatively with colleagues, and participate in continuing education to maintain competencies.

Report equipment malfunctions to supervisor and maintain BCLS certification.

Perform routine and complex CT exams (vascular, musculoskeletal, neuroradiologic) and MRI exams (vascular, neuro, musculoskeletal). Operate automated power injectors and manage IV contrast reactions.

Recognize and initiate treatment for extravasation of IV contrast and allergic reactions; activate emergency code and initiate CPR as needed.

Compete with patient safety and site safety in MR and CT environments; respect regulations governing magnetic environments.

Spend approximately 75% of time performing MR exams and 25% performing CT exams, including general radiology and specialized/interventional procedures.
