Hiring Salary Range: $1,404.63 - $1,817.76 biweekly / $36,520.45 - $47,261.76 annual

The Work You Will Do Highway Maintenance Technician II / District Six / Director of Operations / District Maintenance / South Dade Maint – Traffic Services #1

This position will support the agency’s mission by maintaining and repairing highways, bridges, and related infrastructure to ensure public safety and transportation efficiency. It involves use of construction tools and equipment, performing vehicle inspections and maintenance, and working in diverse outdoor conditions. The position requires effective communication, the ability to follow instructions, and collaboration with team members to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

Annual Salary Range $36,520.45 - $47,261.76. A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive of $1,934.40 will be added.

Your Specific Responsibilities

Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional Permit or License; Operate a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Perform pre‑trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Performs Maintenance of Traffic control.

Knowledge

Typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.

Skills

Operating a variety of hand and power tools.

Operating and performing pre‑trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.

Abilities

Read and understand job‑related materials and fill out reports and forms.

Maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.

Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.

Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.

Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

Stand for an extended period of time, operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

Other Job-Related Requirements

While on duty, incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) required.

Incumbent is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Obtain certification in Maintenance of Traffic – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.

Possess a valid Class “E” driver's license and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment, and obtain a Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

Possess a valid Class “E” driver's license and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and obtain a Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

This position requires a valid Class “E” driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;

any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;

a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and

a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with FMCSA Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee and any additional training and re‑test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
