JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the PAC Manager and Audio-Visual Engineer, the Audio-Visual Technician provides hands‑on technical support for events, rehearsals, and productions at the Performing Arts Center and other City facilities. This position supports lighting, video, and audio operations by assisting with setup, operation, monitoring, and teardown of technical equipment to ensure smooth and successful events.

The Audio‑Visual Technician works closely with the creative team, facility users, City staff, and event personnel to carry out technical plans developed by the Audio‑Visual Engineer. This role emphasizes execution, equipment operation, maintenance assistance, and on‑site event support while following City policies, safety standards, and established procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities May provide day‑to‑day guidance to Facility & Event Laborers, interns, and volunteers during event setup and teardown.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with technical setup, operation, and teardown

of lighting, video, audio, LED screens, projections, and related equipment for events, rehearsals, and productions.

Support the Audio Visual Engineer and PAC staff

during live events by monitoring equipment performance and responding to technical needs as directed.

Operate lighting boards, video systems, sound equipment, and digital displays

at a technician level, following established show files and instructions.

Set up and break down staging elements , including stage risers, sets, props, pipe and drape, and technical equipment.

Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting

of lighting, video, and audio equipment and report more complex issues to the Audio‑Visual Engineer or PAC Manager.

Assist with videography and content capture

for City performances, events, and marketing projects as assigned.

Follow safety procedures

and assist in directing staff, interns, volunteers, and vendors in safe equipment use during events.

Support facility operations

by assisting with interior maintenance tasks related to events, including lighting checks, equipment positioning, and coordination with custodial staff.

Assist with event load‑ins and load‑outs , ensuring equipment and spaces are returned to proper condition.

Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members

regarding event needs, technical issues, and equipment concerns.

Maintain positive working relationships

with City staff, school personnel, vendors, performers, and facility users.

Operate City equipment , including scissor lifts, forklifts, and A/V equipment, in accordance with training and safety requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned

in support of Performing Arts Center and City events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of audio/visual equipment, lighting systems, and video technology used in live events and performances.

Ability to follow technical plans, instructions, and show documentation developed by an Audio‑Visual Engineer or supervisor.

Skill in safely operating lighting consoles, sound boards, video playback systems, and related equipment.

Basic troubleshooting ability for A/V and lighting equipment.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced, event‑driven environment.

Strong customer service skills when interacting with performers, clients, and the public.

Ability to understand and follow safety protocols and City policies.

Ability to lift, move, and position equipment safely.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree in Audio/Visual Technology, Technical Theatre, Media Production, Broadcast Technology, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

One (1) to three (3) years of hands‑on experience supporting audio/visual, lighting, or live event technical operations.

Valid Driver’s License.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and non‑standard hours based on event schedules.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical work related to event setup and teardown.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre, Audio/Visual Production, Media Production, or a related field.

Experience working in a performing arts center, theater, or live event venue.

Familiarity with lighting consoles, digital projection, and video content playback systems.

The Audio‑Visual Technician I must lift, carry, and position moderately heavy items, up to 50 pounds, while maintaining safe work practices. The work demands sustained physical stamina, coordination, and dexterity to operate technical equipment, handle tools, and support live events and production activities. The position also requires the ability to remain on one’s feet for long durations and to respond quickly to changing technical needs during events.

The Audio‑Visual Technician I works primarily at the Performing Arts Center and may also support events and productions at other City facilities such as the Event Center and Coastal Arts Center. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings and may occasionally involve exposure to extreme but safe weather conditions, including heat during outdoor filming, festivals, and post‑storm activities. The position requires working around moving machinery, heavy equipment, vehicles, and mechanical systems with moving parts. The role also involves extended periods working at computers, monitors, lighting consoles, and audio/visual control systems in fast‑paced, event‑driven environments.
