Role Summary The Staff Facilities Controls Engineer will be responsible for supporting the Plant Utilities Operations Manager in ensuring our Plant operates as effectively as possible while providing an exceptional experience to our customers. This role will support and lead a variety of projects related to infrastructure, facility systems, and operational improvements. Additionally, this job involves technical expertise in designing and troubleshooting complex systems like HVAC, plumbing, and controls systems, as well as developing graphical interfaces.

Responsibilities

Ensure health and safety regulations and standards are followed

Communicate across disciplines and management teams, while maintaining professional presence in representing the department in client meetings

Coordinate with consultants including architecture/engineering firms in developing design criteria and preparing layout and detail drawings

Support design, construction, operations, and manufacturing teams as needed

Manage and administrate corporate capital, overhead, and infrastructure project budgets

Planning/Coordinating infrastructure and equipment maintenance schedules and activities

Evaluate operational systems and infrastructure to improve system efficiencies

Provide technical support to the Utilities Maintenance organization as a system point of contact. Technical support would include but is not limited to troubleshooting, operational improvements, procedural improvements, and infrastructure improvements

Develop high performance graphical interfaces

Collaborate on specification development for capital facility equipment such as chillers, boilers, air handling and exhaust equipment, chemical systems, etc.

Provide input into the development of sequence of operations (SOO) documents, functional control specifications, and P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) for utility systems.

Develop and maintain internal documentation such as tag list, owner requirements, specifications, scope of work, etc.

Develop scalable network, DDC/PLC, and server architectures

Lead discussions with stakeholders on user experience (UX) and operating strategies

Evaluate mean time between failure (MTTR) of selected instrumentation

Review bill of material (BOMs) for required instrumentation (e.g., valves, dampers, actuators, sensors, flow monitoring, etc.)

Ensure the designs conform to recognized building codes, providing details, analysis, and recommendations

Perform other duties as needed

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in engineering with 3-5 years’ experience as a hands‑on controls engineer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Electrical engineering degree

Project/Construction management experience preferred

Previous experience in industrial or manufacturing sites preferred

Prior experience completing projects on time and under budget

Prior experience mentoring engineers preferred

Ability to communicate in a high‑pressure environment

Experience troubleshooting practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

Working knowledge of control including, but not limited to:

Proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control

Start/stop optimization

Temperature resets

Alarm/trip functionality

Lead/lag and sequencing

Proficiency with one of the following controls platforms (hardware and/or software):

Ignition

Delta Controls

Alpha Controls

Wago PLC’s

Proficiency in controls design

Control device and instrumentation sizing and selection

Submittal generation (AutoCAD, Visio)

Bill of Material creation and parts ordering.

Proficiency in designing, programming, and commissioning fault‑tolerant systems with error handling and recovery.

Proficiency in variable frequency drives (VFDs).

Proven proficiency in configuration of controls networks including:

Ethernet Networks (e.g., BACnet/IP, OPC‑UA, Modbus TCP).

Serial communication between controllers and field devices. (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU)

Ethernet communications between machine controllers and database systems.

Internet of Things (IoT) based communication (e.g., message query telemetry teleport MQTT).

Estimate cost of various industrial, and utility projects

Ability to read and interpret documents such as governmental regulations (Local, State, & Federal), safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, and procedure manuals

Experienced in writing routine reports, procedures, correspondence, and fill out compliance documentation as required

Experienced in speaking effectively before groups employees, contractors, consultants, and management

Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear

The employee is occasionally required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus

In the performance of the duties of this job the employee is required to travel, drive a motor vehicle, communicate using telephone and email

Pay Disclosure Salary Range for Illinois Based Applicants: $125,800-$157,200 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
