The Paper Machine Assistant Superintendent provides support to the paper machine to expand the capabilities of the process and personnel, and to sustain best in class operating and cost performance. The person in this role is heavily involved in operator training and development and the identification and execution of process improvement projects, while assisting with the day‑to‑day operations on the paper machine. The Paper Machine Assistant Superintendent leads troubleshooting problems occurring with the paper making processes under the direction of the Paper Machine Superintendent.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist production teams in day‑to‑day operation of the stock prep and paper department supporting throughput of a high speed paper machine.
Be a safety role model.
Assist in monthly and annual outage planning.
Develop sound operator instruction documents, such as grade recipes, operator round checklists, SOPs, and LOPs.
Apply data analysis techniques to aid in performance improvements.
Effectively communicate production team needs between functional groups.
Lead document management and retention to ensure proper training documents and related safety documents are current.
Lead daily operational meetings.
Manage department critical tools, such as the paper machine camera system and the pulp mill screen integrity PMs as well as the DMS.
Develop and continually update center‑lining tools with operator input.
Assist the Paper Machine Superintendent on machine down days.
Serve as a back‑up for the Shift Operations Managers.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Experience in JDE, PI, Qlikview, and CMMS
REQUIRED SKILLS
Progressive experience in pulp & paper
Direct supervisory experience on paper machine required
Proven safety leadership
Proven track record of driving continuous improvement
Understanding of the ISO process
Experience in developing Manufacturing Best Practice documents, such as recipes, SOPs, and center‑lines
Ability to work across departments to accomplish mill goals
Clear and concise communication skills
Understanding of a 24‑hour‑a‑day, 365‑day‑a‑year operation
Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
