Utility Maintenance Supervisor - Pump Stations
Overview:
The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified individuals for a Utility Maintenance Supervisor in our Wastewater Division. The Supervisor monitors employees responsible for the repair and maintenance of wastewater pump stations and ensures compliance with safety regulations. The role assists customers with wastewater concerns, troubleshoots pump station functions, responds to customer complaints, and ensures pumping stations are functional. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system monitoring and related duties are performed as needed.
Responsibilities
Supervise the maintenance of wastewater pump stations, resolving issues by investigating complaints, inspecting necessary materials and equipment, scheduling and supervising work, and documenting progress and productivity.
Maintain infrastructure by assessing, scheduling, and supervising work and tracking costs.
Manage projects by investigating complaints, working with engineers to determine the best method to resolve problems, documenting repairs, writing work orders, supervising and documenting deliveries of materials, heavy equipment, and safety barriers, and monitoring work and costs.
Monitor the SCADA system to determine the operating condition of all sanitary sewer pump stations and associated alarms.
Control inventory by taking yearly inventory, procuring supplies and materials from vendors and the City’s storehouse while following purchasing guidelines, and preparing daily timesheets and recording materials used.
Supervise maintenance of grounds by monitoring mowing, weeding, mulching, spraying of herbicides, and litter removal at multiple stations.
Manage employees by inspecting job sites, evaluating staff performance, assigning workers to planned tasks and worksites, assisting crew when needed, reviewing time sheets, preparing reports, conducting performance evaluations, and coordinating orientation and ongoing training of workers, as well as assisting with job interviews.
Ensure compliance with safety measures by conducting safety inspections, informing employees about safety precautions, evaluating worksites for OSHA compliance, contacting Miss Utility, designing traffic patterns for repair crews, developing and enforcing a safety program, and maintaining contact with city and state health and environmental officials.
Assist customers with wastewater concerns by meeting with them to answer questions, describe repairs, and set times for service disruption and street closures.
Respond to emergencies by leading pump station teams and providing after-hours response to sanitary sewer pump station issues.
Manage pump station maintenance through the City’s work order management system.
Work with the Engineering and Technology Division for review of pump station design plans and general pump station engineering issues.
Qualifications
Minimum of four years of utility maintenance, repair, or construction experience.
Valid commercial driver’s license Class B is required.
More than four years of utility maintenance / repair / construction experience.
Basic operational, technical, or office process knowledge equivalent to a four-year high school diploma or equivalent.
Additional, duty-specific training and certification may be required within six months.
Work Hours Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Work Locations Combined Operations Center, 1316 Ballentine Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23502.
Additional Information This position is designated as an Essential position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on-call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
