As a

Field Service Technician‑Network

you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems). You will perform work associated with splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities and equipment, including aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications, and you will be proactive in selling TDS services and products (Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks).

Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Augusta, MI warehouse at 212 S Webster St, 49012.

This position can be hired at either a Field Service Technician (2026‑28522), Field Service Technician‑Network (2026‑28523), or Field Service Technician‑Network Specialist (2026‑28524) level depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate.

Responsibilities

Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers. Identify location of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable. Locate and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Keep an orderly log of all locate requests and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.

Assist with and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to “trouble” dispatches.

Assist with and provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).

Provide excellent customer service. Proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.

Gain working knowledge of RUS standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.

Required Qualifications

1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.

6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.

Valid driver’s license.

Availability to follow TDS attendance guidelines and meet business needs.

Other Qualifications

Successful completion of customer‑specific requirements (background check). Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel, and overtime.

Pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum upon hire.

Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.

Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.

Understanding of telecommunications products and services (inside wiring, Internet, bonding, grounding, etc.).

Practical knowledge of computer applications (databases, dispatch systems, MS Office).

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Demonstrated customer service and sales skills with effective verbal and written communication.

Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.

Ability to operate manual‑transmission vehicles.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly required to sit, stand, write, operate computer equipment, and communicate with customers. Frequently required to move, reach out, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance or climb. May lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally. Requires good vision (close, distance, color, peripheral).

Work may be outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and in extreme weather. Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
