Core Network Technician III - (Prudhoe Bay, AK) GCI Communication Corp. is seeking a Core Network Technician III to manage the operation and maintenance of our core networks in Prudhoe Bay, AK. This 2‑week rotational position offers a $2,500 hiring bonus and involves ensuring optimal network availability, performance, and reliability across multiple vendor platforms.

Job Description

This role is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the company’s core networks to ensure optimal network availability, performance, and reliability. The Technician will proactively monitor and support critical systems and network components, coordinate installation, upgrades, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of network elements, and ensure changes comply with company change‑management policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct daily operational checks and perform routine preventative maintenance on all Core Network elements and associated infrastructure.

Provide technical support for a variety of network elements to ensure compliance with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair network equipment and related hardware, minimizing Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).

Deliver technical assistance and guidance to internal teams and external partners, providing hands‑on support, knowledge sharing, and targeted training.

Communicate real‑time system status updates to stakeholders, including the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and Base Transceiver Station (BTS) teams.

Administer and provide ongoing support for system applications across multiple vendor platforms.

Coordinate and execute system software, firmware, and hardware upgrades with vendors and engineering teams.

Install, test, and troubleshoot transmission facilities, maintaining accurate system documentation.

Monitor and track repair parts and materials; submit Network Change Service Requests (NCSRs) for scheduled maintenance activities.

Additional Job Requirements

This intermediate‑level position requires comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated proficiency across all core areas. The role involves performing complex tasks with minimal supervision and serving as a resource and mentor to junior technicians.

Additional Competencies include:

Executing basic and complex equipment installations, testing, and system turn‑ups with minimal supervision.

Commissioning and provisioning new equipment while ensuring compliance with Change Management processes.

Understanding the High Availability (HA) Policy and executing HA Methods of Procedure (MOPs) with minimal oversight.

Technical proficiencies:

Advanced knowledge of transport technologies including T‑Carrier, SONET, DWDM, CWDM, and PON systems.

Strong understanding of Internet Protocol (IP), address planning, IP schemes, and subnetting.

Knowledge of fiber optic safety standards and installation best practices.

Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of DC power systems.

Skilled in the use of industry‑standard test equipment for installation and troubleshooting.

Ability to operate and interpret results from OTDR, Ethernet, and other advanced testing tools.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of eight (8) years of increasing responsibility and experience within a telecommunication central office or related environment.

Preferred

Associate degree in electronics or a relevant field, telecommunications trade school, or equivalent training.

Telecom industry or job‑specific certifications.

Experience with Ciena and Nokia equipment.

Driving Requirements

Requires driving a company‑owned vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete a Defensive Driving course.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily moving, traversing, and positioning on varied uneven or unstable surfaces such as roofs and trenches.

Ability to move and maneuver equipment and supplies up to 70 pounds.

High dexterity and coordination for hand tools and small item handling.

Visual and auditory acuity necessary for identifying cables, components, and operating equipment.

Tolerance for temperature extremes and adverse weather conditions in the Alaskan Arctic environment.

Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, shift work, on‑call, and travel as required.

Background / Security Conditions

Level 1 background check may include criminal history, credit check, and DMV records.

Drug and alcohol testing as needed.

Potential for U.S. Government background check, TWIC, and other security badges.

Compliance with Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
