Core Network Technician II - (Fairbanks, AK) GCI Communication Corp. is offering a two‑week rotational position with a $2,500 hiring bonus. The Core Network Technician II will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the company’s core networks to ensure optimal network availability, performance, and reliability, proactively monitoring and supporting critical systems to maintain uninterrupted infrastructure functionality and customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct daily operational checks and perform routine preventative maintenance on all core network elements and associated infrastructure.

Provide remote diagnostics and on‑site support with dispatch to urban and rural locations.

Provide technical support for a variety of network elements, proactively monitoring performance, addressing service‑impacting issues, and escalating incidents as needed.

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair network equipment and related hardware, minimizing MTTR.

Deliver technical assistance and guidance to internal teams and external partners, including training.

Communicate real‑time system status updates to stakeholders during outages.

Administer and support system applications across vendor platforms, managing vendor tickets.

Coordinate and execute system software, firmware, and hardware upgrades.

Coordinate installation, testing, and troubleshooting of transmission facilities.

Maintain accurate documentation and logs.

Track repair parts and materials; submit NCSRs for scheduled maintenance.

Knowledge of telecommunication protocols, availability, redundancy, reliability monitoring, signaling, and testing.

Excellent computer skills and basic MS Office knowledge.

Additional Job Requirements This is a mid‑level position within the core network operations field, responsible for independently performing routine tasks and contributing to more complex assignments under moderate supervision.

Additional Competencies

Demonstrates a moderate understanding of telecommunications systems, installation, modification, and testing.

Possesses a foundational knowledge of Change Management processes.

Routinely conducts inspections and preventive maintenance.

Technical Proficiencies:

Basic to intermediate knowledge of transmission technologies (T‑Carrier, SONET, DWDM, CWDM, PON).

Understanding of IP, including IP addressing schemes and subnetting principles.

Familiarity with fiber optic safety guidelines and installation standards.

Working knowledge of DC power systems.

Proficient in using test equipment common to telecom systems.

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of six (6) years of increasing responsibility and experience within a telecommunication central office or related environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree in electronics or relevant field.

Telecom industry or job‑specific certifications.

Experience with Ciena and Nokia.

Driving Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete a defensive driving course.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily moving, traversing, and positioning on varied uneven or unstable surfaces such as roofs and trenches, often hampered by weather.

Safely move, transport, and maneuver equipment and supplies of up to 70‑pound loads occasionally, up to 50‑pounds more regularly, and up to 20 pounds frequently.

High degree of dexterity and coordination.

Visual and auditory acuity necessary to operate equipment.

Subject to adverse weather and driving conditions.

Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes in the Alaskan Arctic environment.

Work areas can be cramped, dark, dusty, damp, wet, sticky, smelly, hot, and/or cold.

Overtime, shift work, and on‑call required.

Travel may be required to different site locations, including urban, outlying, Arctic regions of Alaska, or North‑East US area locations.

Background / Security Conditions Background and security checks are subject to Level 1 background checks including criminal history, credit check, and DMV records. Additional state of AK contract requirements may apply. GCI will comply with federal and state statutes such as the FCRA and ADAAA.

Badging may be required depending on assignment of work location.
