OR Assistant
Under general supervision but according to established policies and procedures, perform a variety of non‑medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Duties include transporting patients to and from the operating room, picking up and delivering supplies, assisting in pre‑operative scrubs, supporting patients during surgery, cleaning and preparing equipment, preparing material for sterilization, and assembling charge form packets.
Responsibilities
Transport patients to and from the surgical suite.
Review preoperative patient charts to ensure all forms are signed and all tests completed; inform nursing personnel of discrepancies.
Assist in operating room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes.
Clean furniture and equipment between cases.
Obtain necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures.
Assist in prepping patients for surgery, including preoperative scrubs, lifting, moving, positioning, and supporting patients for spinal anesthesia injection.
Inventory, requisition, receive, and stock supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes, and other items.
Pick up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the hospital (pharmaceuticals, blood, plasma, routine supplies).
Deliver cultures and surgical specimens to designated areas for analysis.
Assist in general cleaning and maintenance of the operating room, including washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning the room, washing stretchers, and changing light bulbs.
Clean, dry, package, and seal supplies and materials to be sterilized; assemble basin sets for sterilization.
Operate steam/water pressure sterilizers to clean and sterilize items when required.
Assemble patient record packs of charge slips specific to each surgical procedure for completion by others.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Ability to recognize changes in a patient’s condition and report them to nursing personnel.
Ability to perform simple numerical calculations to calculate and requisition supplies.
Knowledge of aseptic techniques to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment, and materials.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns at each step of the care process.
Ability to read, write, and understand English.
One to three months of on‑the‑job training and experience.
Physical and Work Environment
Physical ability to transport patients throughout the hospital, assist in lifting and positioning patients, and clean and set up equipment.
Work in the operating room area with exposure to odors, bodily fluids, chemical fumes, and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms.
Require frequent standing, walking, lifting, and carrying to transport patients and materials and stock supplies.
Hazards of injury are minimized through adherence to established safety precautions.
No supervisory responsibility.
Pay Range $21.13 – $21.65
