Job Summary The Senior Product Development Engineer is a hands‑on engineer who serves as a principal contributor to the design, development, and introduction of new products within IPG Photonics’ high‑performance laser and optomechanical systems portfolio. Working under the guidance of senior engineering managers, this role focuses on concept design, prototyping, and design validation, collaborating with optomechanical, electronics, and software teams to develop robust, manufacturable solutions that meet performance, reliability, and cost objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of new products and subsystems, from early concept definition through detailed design, prototyping, and production release.

Lead optomechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless design integration, system performance, and manufacturability throughout the product lifecycle.

Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and engineering documentation in SolidWorks, applying GD&T and ASME Y14.5 standards to ensure design accuracy and quality.

Perform analyses and design optimization—including tolerance, thermal, structural, and vibration evaluations—to verify robust functionality in demanding environments and optimize overall system performance.

Support prototype fabrication, testing, and validation, applying results to guide design refinement and successful transition to production.

Expand expertise in mechanical, optical, and thermal design principles for high‑power laser and optomechanical systems, while contributing to continuous improvement in product development methods and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

5+ years of product development experience, with demonstrated hands‑on involvement in design, prototyping, and testing.

Expertise with SolidWorks 3D CAD and 2D drafting (including GD&T and ASME Y14.5), complemented by a comprehensive understanding of mechanical design and analysis principles.

Experience with prototype fabrication, testing, and design validation processes.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.

Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, casting, and additive manufacturing, with emphasis on design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).

Experience with optomechanical systems, precision mechanisms, or electromechanical assemblies, and familiarity with optical design tools such as Zemax for collaboration with optical engineering teams.

Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal simulation tools for structural and thermal validation.

Experience with programming or automation tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for test automation, data collection, or analysis.
