This is an unclassified position within the Fulton County Police Department’s Animal Control Service.

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year of experience caring for and handling shelter animals and wildlife, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the job.

Specific Licenses or Certifications Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Must obtain and maintain the National Animal Control Association (NACA) ACO (Animal Control Officer) I certificate within 12 months of employment.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Must demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary for effective performance.

Purpose of Classification Provides a safe environment for humans and animal residents in Fulton County. Responsibilities include responding to dispatch calls for animal rescue, assisting the public with animal‑related situations, and enforcing state and local animal statutes.

Essential Functions

Enforce animal laws or ordinances; capture domestic, wild, dangerous, or aggressive animals; set animal traps; load animals into cages; transport animals to shelter, veterinary offices, or other locations; relocate displaced wildlife; remove dead animals from roads; assist law enforcement in removing animals from accident or crime scenes.

Patrol assigned areas to catch, handle, restrain, confine, transport, and impound stray, injured, unwanted, diseased, neglected or abused animals using specialized equipment.

Inspect animals to determine medical condition, care received, and decide appropriate action to prevent inhumane treatment.

Respond to citizen complaints and investigate alleged violations of animal laws; observe, interview witnesses; issue warnings and citations; conduct inspection calls; perform follow‑up inspections.

Conduct investigations and prepare written reports; gather evidence for court cases; testify as a witness; monitor court matters; review cases; develop summaries of court‑related activities; perform follow‑ups.

Assist in maintaining the shelter by performing duties such as recovery, cleaning, feeding; coordinate with intake, impoundment, dispatch, and animal care teams; ensure correct intake data, accurate identification, and proper confinement and disposition.

Interpret and enforce federal, state, local codes, ordinances, laws; provide information; discuss problem areas; recommend solutions; respond to questions; educate citizens; visit schools.

Process documentation including complaints, investigations, intake calls, violation notices, citations, court reports; maintain records.

Operate county motor vehicle and personal computer for data entry; operate office equipment.

Communicate with county officials, supervisors, other employees, law enforcement, residents, veterinarians, court officials, public, and others as needed.

Additional Functions Perform other related duties as required.
