Essential Job Duties

The temporary Research Accountant serves as the lead fiscal manager for a portfolio of sponsored projects (ledger five grant accounts) within the department. The Research Accountant will oversee grant account activity, ensure compliance with university and sponsor guidelines, and support Accounting Technicians and faculty in effective financial management.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee fiscal management of sponsored projects, including rebudgets, no-cost extensions, reconciliations, and account corrections. Monitor project activity to identify and resolve issues proactively. Meet with faculty to provide guidance on budget forecasting and long-term financial planning. Address complex financial and compliance-related questions from faculty and staff. Coordinate with departments, HR, and college finance staff to resolve fiscal and administrative issues. Interpret and communicate university, federal, and agency compliance requirements to faculty. Organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks to Accounting Technicians to support efficient workflow.

This position is required to come to campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays weekly.

Minimum Experience/Education

Post-award experience in the administration of sponsored awards Knowledge of the University and State financial processes.

Highly detail-oriented and thorough in all tasks. Remains composed and effective under pressure. Knowledgeable in grants management and applicable federal circulars. Capable of evaluating and resolving complex, unprecedented issues through research and policy review. Exercises sound judgment in addressing program requirements and resolving problems. Understands and interprets complex regulations and concepts, and communicates them clearly to others. Proactively identifies opportunities for process improvement to enhance efficiency and service. Skilled at de-escalating and resolving issues to meet customer needs. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, and related software platforms.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

5 years of post-award experience in the administration of sponsored awards. Proposal development experience. Budget preparation Strong communication – written and verbal Deadline driven time management Knowledge of the University and State financial processes. Experience/knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards, Uniform Guidance, and ledger 5. PeopleSoft financial experience and knowledge of PeopleSoft actions.
