The District Safety Coordinator ensures the development, implementation, and monitoring of all safety, security, and emergency preparedness measures in alignment with Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) guidelines and Mississippi school safety laws.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Direct Safety Planning, Compliance, and Physical Security (40%)
Maintain District and School Safety Plans in compliance with MDE guidance.
Provide guidance on required safety drills (fire, tornado, active shooter/intruder) and ensure documentation and compliance.
Conduct routine safety and security audits of district grounds, buildings and transportation areas.
Recommend and oversee corrective actions related to facility hazards, access control, and security systems.
Assess traffic patterns during school drop-off and dismissal and make recommendations as needed to enhance traffic flow.
Examine and propose enhancements to security protocols (door and alarm codes, master keys, and key cards).
Ensure compliance with safety grants, state reporting and district policies.
Oversee Emergency Operations and Crisis Response (25%)
Ensure preparedness for emergency response in collaboration with the School Resource Officers, Principals, and other district leaders.
Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency management agencies.
Lead and support real-time response and recovery during emergencies or critical incidents.
Oversee emergency drills, collect information on staff debriefings, and conduct tabletop exercises.
Assist with crisis communication to staff, students and families by working with the Director of Communications.
Manage Training, Communication, and Stakeholder Engagement (20%)
Train staff in safety procedures, emergency response, threat recognition, and compliance protocols.
Manage the Emergency Management Platform (Raptor). Maintain current school staff and roles within the system.
Provide training for district employees on the Emergency Management Platform (Raptor).
Maintain accurate documentation of drills, audits and safety incidents.
Serve as liaison to law enforcement, first responders, parents and community partners.
Promote safety awareness, encourage the use of anonymous reporting tools and support parent/community meetings.
Facilitate Threat Assessments, Prevention, and Student Support (10%)
Assist schools with conducting proper threat assessments utilizing their threat assessment teams.
Identify and monitor potential risks involving student behavior, bullying, self-harm or violence.
Collaborate with counselors, SROs, mental-health partners and community agencies to implement prevention strategies.
Support programs focused on behavior intervention, conflict resolution and school climate improvement.
Additional Responsibilities (5%)
Work collaboratively with the Lead School Resource Officer.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in education, criminal justice, public safety, emergency management or related field preferred.
Experience in school safety, law enforcement, emergency management or education.
Knowledge of Mississippi school safety requirements and emergency planning procedures.
Ability to utilize technology effectively, in particular a safety management platform.
Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, school staff and administration.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
All employees hired by the school district must pass a criminal background and child abuse registry check.
