Open Competitive OPS Licensed Practical Nurse 10 Month Schedule (Aug-May) 37.5 Hours per week – $21/Hour Your Specific Responsibilities The Licensed Practical Nurse, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse Specialist (RN), provides school health services to students, staff, families, and school visitors. This school health position operates on a 10‑month school‑year calendar with time off during Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and summer breaks. The nurse assists in delivering health services to public school students with the goal of optimal health so that health issues will not interfere with their education. After a planned orientation to familiarize the employee with the Leon County Health Department, the employee will function as a paraprofessional in the school health room under close oversight of the RN, maintaining a cooperative, caring relationship with students, parents/guardians, school staff, and Leon County Health Department supervisors.

Essential Job Functions Duties are as follows

Triage student complaints, observe their health status, provide comfort measures, first aid, and/or CPR to ill or injured children following regulations and procedures established by the Leon County Public School System, the Leon County Health Department, and the Florida State Department of Education.

Implement federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures related to school health services.

Implement laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to control communicable disease within the school setting.

Maintain daily, monthly, and yearly statistics on health room services for reporting purposes in HMS, EARS, and FOCUS.

Perform Clerical Duties Regarding Health Services

Organize, file, and maintain health information in a confidential manner.

Document health services provided.

Maintain the clinic supply inventory.

Assist the school nurse with students' health record review and follow‑up using emergency clinic cards.

Administer medication to students per policy and procedure, maintaining student medication and records.

Assist with blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and carbohydrate counting for diabetic students.

Identify and document students with health problems and refer them to the SCHN (school nurse).

Enter services provided to each student in their individual health record on FOCUS.

Communicate necessary medical information in a timely manner to parents/guardians, the school nurse, and appropriate school personnel while maintaining confidentiality.

Maintain emergency procedure information for students and staff.

Maintain a back‑up notebook in the event of absence or technical difficulties.

Establish and maintain open communication and a cooperative relationship with students, staff, parents, and community.

Maintain a clean, safe, and adequately stocked health room.

Accept supervisory direction.

Perform specialized medical procedures for students after receiving child‑specific training and delegation by the school nurse (e.g., insulin administration, blood glucose monitoring, and/or CPR).

Provide a supportive atmosphere for students and staff while ensuring appropriate health room use.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate and listen effectively.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to interview students to obtain health information.

Ability to work independently without direct supervision.

Basic knowledge of computers and data entry.

Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines for student medical records.

Valid LPN License.
