This is a Part‑Time position working 2 days a week (7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.) and every 4th weekend. New graduates are encouraged to apply.

The Registered Nurse in the Medical/Surgical Department is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, patient education, and discharge planning.

Essential Functions

Use assessment skills and techniques to determine patient needs and condition upon admission and on an ongoing basis, responding appropriately.

Complete and document the nursing admission assessment in a thorough and accurate manner as defined by unit policy.

Assess the need for patient and family education.

Perform hourly rounding on patients.

Initiate, develop, and document patient plans of care based on assessment and medical diagnosis, setting priorities for nursing actions in accordance with unit policy on time‑frames.

Review and update the plan of care every 12 hours or as needed.

Develop a patient education and discharge plan as necessary.

Collaborate with other health team members in planning and providing care.

Delegate care to team members based on complexity, staff education, competency, state regulations, and Knoxville Hospital and Clinics’ policy.

Provide safe and comprehensive nursing care according to state regulations, hospital policy, and DNV standards.

Establish care priorities based on patient problems; communicate with staff and new employees about patient problems, concerns, and changes in condition, and notify physician promptly regarding concerns.

Be proficient in medication administration, including IV therapy, as evidenced by a lack of medication errors.

Perform procedures accurately, completely, and safely according to established policy, procedure, and physician orders.

Provide care with minimal supervision in a timely manner.

Maintain a safe work environment for patients and coworkers, using safety precautions and PPE appropriately.

Use an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

Apply critical thinking skills to intervene with appropriate care for urgent or emergent patient care needs.

Care for acute and chronically ill patients.

Identify and manage life‑sustaining physiological functions in unstable patients.

Demonstrate IV and Central Line management skills.

Perform additional essential functions and obtain certifications as needed for the area.

Job Requirements

Current license as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

Current BLS with ACLS and PALS preferred within one year.

Mandatory Reporter Training.

One year of general Medical/Surgical experience preferred.

Required to complete all annual competency training and maintain license and/or certification.
