Responsibilities
Perform entry‑level to routine nursing work in an inpatient psychiatric setting under the supervision of the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ nursing care needs, identify nursing diagnoses, and formulate an initial plan of care based on assessment data.
Establish unit routines, develop and maintain the therapeutic milieu, and ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
Observe and analyze patient behavior and status, documenting findings and reporting to the psychiatrist, other recovery team members, and supervising nurse.
Carry out nursing interventions as identified in the multidisciplinary recovery plan and administer medications as ordered.
Maintain medication administration and controlled drug records in accordance with facility policy.
Provide training to other staff members as necessary or as requested.
Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response or Continuity of Operations activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Assist with the use of restraints or seclusion to ensure safety of patients and staff.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Attend work on a regular basis, including specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
Perform comprehensive assessment of patients’ needs across physical, behavioral, psychiatric, and social domains.
Document observations and reports in the medical record or communicate with team members, including the attending psychiatrist.
Contribute to individualized recovery plans in collaboration with other recovery team members based on assessment data.
Provide health teaching and coping strategies to patients and families.
Utilize one‑to‑one counseling skills in therapeutic interactions to assist patients with anxiety and coping strategies.
Initiate and implement population‑specific nursing interventions based on appropriate standards of care.
Document and maintain medication administration (MAR) and controlled drug records.
Maintain the therapeutic milieu to ensure patient safety and therapeutic environment.
Provide training to staff in psychiatric nursing principles, unit routines, and milieu management.
Implement restraints or seclusion appropriately for patient and staff safety.
Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response or Continuity of Operations activation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of medical diagnoses and procedures.
Knowledge of accepted medical treatment programs.
Knowledge of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures.

Licensure & Registration Requirements Applicants must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Texas, or in a party state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact. Alternatively, a temporary permit to perform duties under supervision while awaiting license issuance is acceptable.
If transporting patients, a valid Texas driver license is required (or must be obtained within 90 days of hire). Out‑of‑state driver licenses must be accompanied by an original certified driving record.
Initial Screening Criteria Graduation from an accredited nursing program or a four‑year college or university with major coursework in nursing.
Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, a pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, among others. Males between 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age for employment at a state‑operated facility; Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. Employees may be required to wear a mask and take additional protective measures if not immunized for influenza.
