Brief Job Description This position is available for Morning, Evening, and Night shifts across multiple homes. It may be eligible for additional pay for work performed evenings, nights, weekends, or at maximum‑security locations. The role serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The State Supported Living Centers provide campus‑based direct services at 13 centers statewide.

Key Responsibilities

Attend work on a regular basis, following a shift schedule that may include rotating shifts, extended shifts, and overtime.

Serve on call as required to meet operational needs.

Perform routine nursing tasks and procedures per HHSC, SSLC, and state regulations (e.g., tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, breathing treatments).

Collect specimens for laboratory examination and conduct appropriate screening tests.

Administer medications, immunizations, and treatments, observing patients for adverse reactions.

Make rounds and/or home visits; monitor individuals’ weight, diet, feeding, and vital signs.

Assist in evaluating nursing intervention outcomes and provide input for improvement.

Document and report treatments and observations accurately in the medical record (electronic or paper).

Assist LVNs and Certified Medication Aides (CMAs) as needed; support training and protocol implementation.

Support the Nurse Manager with controlled drug counts, medication counts, emergency checklists, refrigerator temperature logs, and glucose controls.

Collaborate with the Infection Control nurse and Quality Assurance Nurse on infection prevention and therapeutic nursing programs.

Respond to emergency situations, ensuring safety of individuals and staff.

Participate in disaster response, continuity of operations, or other agency obligations as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of nursing techniques, healthcare laws, medical diagnoses, procedures, and nursing care principles.

Knowledge of state and federal laws, ICF‑IID rules, and ACS ICF‑IID policies.

Skill in patient care and use of computer/software, including an electronic health record system.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to interpret policies, regulations, and healthcare procedures.

Ability to demonstrate emergency procedure knowledge and equipment use.

Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, family, and staff.

Ability to work independently and productively with all staff levels.

Ability to provide support and coaching to LVNs, CMAs, and DSPs.

Ability to make decisions and recommendations to SSLC leadership.

Registrations, Licensure, and Certification Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact).

Initial Screening Criteria

Work experience as a practicing registered nurse is required.

At least six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse in a health agency, hospital, or healthcare facility is preferred.

Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

All SSLC employees are subject to random drug testing.

Work hours may require overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
