Position Summary
The Specialist Pharmacist, as the subject matter expert, leads in their specialized area of pharmacy practice. In collaboration with teams and leaders, the Pharmacist Specialist assists and is accountable for assisting the department of pharmacy in implementing departmental strategy, optimizing outcomes, achieving financial targets, and ensuring operational excellence. The pharmacist serves as a liaison with external stakeholders to work toward achieving department goals. They lead and/or coordinate team members to participate in internal and external committees, subcommittees, and taskforces/workgroups, which may include but are not limited to UCOP and P&T. The pharmacist helps facilitate resident and/or student activities and learnings, as well as lead research and medication evaluations to align with overall departmental needs and goals. The Specialist Pharmacist is accountable for promoting positive patient outcomes through incorporation of clinical practice, education, system thinking, leadership, and project management.
The Licensing and Accreditation Specialist Pharmacist ensures organizational compliance with federal/state regulations and accreditation requirements (FDA, CDPH, BOP, TJC, etc.) for medication management. The pharmacist develops audit templates and coordinates required monthly compliance monitoring of enterprise-wide medication storage areas, including sterile compounding areas. The pharmacist reviews, analyzes, and trends data to identify gaps and participates/ leads process improvement activities.
Coordinates pharmacy regulatory and compliance related activities, programs, and initiatives. Position interacts with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, Licensing and Accreditation, Legal, Risk Management, and Pharmacy. This position assists in expert review of regulatory actions and works with the various stakeholders to aid in the operational interpretation, impacts, and implementation of regulatory changes. Development of this capability will support a more proactive approach to identifying and managing pharmacy related legislative and regulatory risk.

Minimum Qualifications
Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education certified school of pharmacy, or equivalent training
Completion of Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) training at an American Society of Health System Pharmacist (ASHP) Accredited program, or 5 years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
Experience in quality improvement, project management and/or professional service
Three (3) years of work experience in pharmacy operations or administration
Two (2) years of experience with a regulatory and compliance component in a health-care setting, or equivalent experience
Ability to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Ability to collaborate and work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment, including the ability to manage projects and deadlines, and to set and meet goals and priorities for self and others with minimal supervision
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage professionals through influence and collaboration
Problem‑solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties

Strong knowledge of pharmacy regulatory process in California

Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time‑management skills

Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceuticals, including drug supplies
Knowledge of regulations, methods, and procedures involved in preparation of non‑sterile and sterile pharmaceuticals
Knowledge of change management and process improvement methodologies
Knowledge of prescription and non‑prescription drugs and drug products and their indications, efficacy, dosage, mechanisms of action, fate and disposition (if known), major contraindications and potential side effects
Knowledge of influence of patient's age, sex, concomitant disease states, concurrent drug therapy, foods and diagnostic procedures on drug activity and disposition
Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature, medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states
Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies
Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry and mathematics as they relate to pharmacy practice

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient‑centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.
The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
