Position Overview
Research Technician – Gnotobiotic Core, Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, Raleigh, NC. Part‑time (20 hours per week) for a one‑year term with probable renewal.
Responsibilities
Animal Husbandry and Colony Maintenance:
Perform daily animal care for germ‑free and gnotobiotic mice housed in flexible film isolators.
Monitor health and behavior, recording abnormalities promptly.
Change cages and refill water bottles using strict sterile protocols within the isolator.
Core Preparation and Sterilization:
Package food and fill large water bottles for autoclaving.
Prepare cylinders of supplies (cages, bedding, etc.) for autoclaving prior to introduction into isolators.
Assist the Core Manager with sterile introduction of supplies into isolators.
Facilities and Inventory:
Monitor and ensure integrity of flexible film isolators.
Maintain cleanliness and organization inside and outside isolators.
Assist with accurate inventory management and submitting orders.
Help assemble isolators from component parts and maintain them in usable condition.
Additional Responsibilities:
Wear a full‑face respirator as needed.
Perform other tasks as required by the organization.
Qualifications
Experience in animal care, laboratory, or research settings (highly desirable).
Ability to follow strict protocols and SOPs.
High attention to detail and precision.
Physical capability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for accurate documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience handling and restraining rodents.
