Job Summary The Clinical Nurse Professional Development Educator (NPD) collaborates with staff, leadership, faculty and researchers to plan, implement, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate educational programs that improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Exemplary Practice
Assessment practice gaps: conduct learning needs of the target audience.
Validate identified needs with learners, content experts and nurse leaders.
Prioritize anticipated needs in alignment with system strategic goals.
Use data to identify future trends and issues.
Identify learning needs: assess and identify practice gaps related to the educational needs of learners.
Determine needs from current issues and trends (falls, infections, new equipment, regulatory changes, etc.).
Document evidence of professional practice gaps in a retrievable manner.
Identify outcomes for learning activities and programs; involve learners and stakeholders in formulation of desired outcomes.
Use outcomes to demonstrate that learning activities are meeting their intended purpose and quality.
Revise based on changes in trends, evidence, or stakeholder expectations.
Plan: establish a plan that prescribes strategies, alternatives, and resources to achieve expected outcomes.
Develop educational objectives to meet learner needs.
Reflect adult learning and instructional design principles in planning.
Incorporate diverse learners within the target audience.
Collaborate with other disciplines to enhance comprehensiveness of the plan; document planning process.
Implementation, Coordination, and Evaluation
Implement the educational plan.
Coordinate education.
Facilitate positive learning experiences.
Evaluate progress toward attainment of outcomes.
Select valid and reliable methods and instruments to measure processes and outcomes.
Involve learners and stakeholders in the evaluation plan.
Use evaluation data to guide future decision making and disseminate results.
Revise based on evaluation data.
Teamwork and Shared Leadership
Collaborate with support departments (organizational learning, safety and quality, IT, BI, etc.).
Serve as a clinical resource to nursing staff, leadership, and medical staff for interdisciplinary practice.
Demonstrate fiscal responsibility and promote recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members.
Consult with preceptors/orientees to facilitate completion of orientation.
Engage colleagues in planning and implementation of lifelong learning activities.
Support performance improvement initiatives and promote shared governance.
Professional Development
Ensure confidentiality and corporate compliance with required mandatory education.
Serve as a preceptor or mentor for other professional nurses and staff.
Participate in educational activities related to the specialty area.
Apply current standards, guidelines, policies, and regulations in education.
Seek professional certification in NPD.
Creative Innovation
Promote evidence‑based practice, research and performance improvement.
Participate in value analysis and QI initiatives.
Uphold health‑care system policies, legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Integrate ethics into all areas of practice.
Develop innovative solutions and strategies to secure resources for professional development.
Introduce new ideas and embrace meaningful change.
Clinical Resources and Support
Perform the nursing process in clinical care using evidence‑based practice.
Coordinate delivery and documentation of safe quality patient care.
Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessment and required education.
Required Minimum Education
Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications
Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN – Multi‑state Compact
Basic Life Support (BLS) – Instructor
Additional Licenses and Certifications
ACLS, NRP or PALS per unit requirement (if required, must receive within 6 months of employment in position within 180 days).
Required Minimum Experience
Minimum 3 years of nursing practice experience
Experience with direct patient care
May support more than one facility or specialty
Acute Care/Med Surg experience preferred
Required Minimum Skills
Ability to read, write, and speak English; advanced computer skills.
Demonstrates emotional intelligence.
Strong interpersonal, collaborative, customer service skills.
Functional in a fast‑paced environment and respond to emergencies with decisiveness and respect; excellent time‑management.
Strong understanding of adult learning theories and ability to utilize multi‑methods to implement training.
Uses tools, theories, skills, and knowledge of the specialty to improve healthcare practice of learners.
