Position Summary Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Anesthesia unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. This position works in both the Large and Small Animal clinics. The role includes anesthesia administration (premedication, induction, maintenance/monitoring, recovery), conscious sedation, perioperative patient care, analgesia, venipuncture, IVC placement, and other duties on a wide variety of small and large animal patients. It also involves instructing students, assisting clinicians, maintaining supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of the anesthesia hospital areas, and participating in a rotational on‑call schedule for overnight/weekends.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical or vocational schooling in Veterinary Technology/Nursing.

Six months to one year of related experience in extensive patient care, emergency/critical care, surgery, anesthesia, drug dosing, and sterile techniques.

Licensed as a Veterinary Technician in the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year from employment.

Desired Qualifications

Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting.

Experience with Electronic Medical Record software or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting animal patients onto cages and medical equipment, and carrying them between cages, exam tables, and gurneys.

Pushing carts containing animals and equipment to other units.

Climbing stairs while carrying lab samples.

Restraining animals.

Preparing for medical procedures and treatments.

Individual lifting up to 50 lbs and up to 150 lbs as a team.

Summary of Health Risks

Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium.

Work with animals or unfixed tissue.

Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
