The Nurse Clinician demonstrates a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of complex patients and their responses to health problems. This role assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The Nurse Clinician provides direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in area of responsibility. This role includes professional development and empowerment of staff as well as management of resources to promote desired outcomes with attention to quality, efficiency and cost.

Overview The Nurse Clinician demonstrates expertise in clinical assessment and treatment, leads program development and evaluation, and supports staff development and resource management to achieve quality and efficiency goals.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment

Current RN Licensure in Virginia

AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent

Experience

Experience REQUIRED:

5 years nursing experience required

Minimum of one year experience in the position's specialty patient population or practice setting

Experience PREFERRED:

Experience in staff education and professional development (orientation, preceptorship, in-services education, etc.)

Academic health care experience

Education/Training

Education/training REQUIRED:

Master’s Degree in Nursing or a related field or within one semester of completion. If the Master’s Degree is not in Nursing, then it is required to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing unless grandfathered under previous requirements

Education/training PREFERRED:

Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited program; Certification in specialty area preferred

Independent Actions

Has full authority and accountability for direction and leadership of program planning, guideline development, setting of practice standards within the confines of organization/divisions/units mission, goals and objectives.

Manages human, fiscal and other resources to ensure quality programs/processes/services with measurable positive outcomes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Negotiable with immediate supervisor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.

Additional Position Requirements

Will generally work day shift, but may require flexibility for special projects or to meet organization and staff needs.

Age Specific Groups Served As appropriate based on unit assignment.

Physical Requirements

Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs; Lifting 50-100 lbs

Activities: Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)

Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking

Emotional: Fast pace environment, Steady pace, Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change
