The person filling this role must be flexible about start- and end-dates, as well as work schedule around upcoming holidays. We anticipate the person in this temporary position will work between 3-4 days per week, and will be responsible for covering at least one weekend day each week, and will share holiday coverage responsibilities with other vivarium staff. Typically, the maximum weekly hours will be in the 20-28 hrs/wk range (though this may vary with holiday coverage).Under the direction of the Vivarium Manager, the Animal Technician performs duties related to the daily care of laboratory animals, working with different species of animals and aquatic organisms as assignments dictate.**Duties:*** Maintain proper levels of food and water for all animals* Observes animals for health daily* Report injuries or illnesses of animals to the Vivarium Manager or Consulting Veterinarian* Performs minor medical treatment of animals when needed* Change and sanitize animal bedding, cages, water bottles, and related items.* Operate the cage washer and other equipment as required* Perform miscellaneous housekeeping, sanitize animal rooms, floors, and support areas* Maintain and ensure all equipment is in good working order* Monitor water quality in aquaria and maintain fresh and saltwater aquariums* Provide occasional technical assistance such as restraint, injections, banding, ear tagging, etc.**Training will be provided.****Qualifications:*** Prior laboratory animal care and handling experience required (preferably for more than one year).* Must be willing to work with a variety of laboratory animals, including rodents, birds, and aquatic species.Note that strong scents are not permitted in the vivarium, including colognes, deodorants, perfumes, smoking, vaping, etc.**Requirements:*** No known allergies to animals* Ability to regularly and safely lift up to 50 lbs* Willing to work shared weekends and holiday duties.* High school diploma (Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred)***This position has been classified as essential personnel. In the event of inclement weather or other emergency conditions that require the College to close, you are expected to report to work if you are scheduled to work that day, in accordance with Article 8.1.f of the Independent Service and Maintenance Union contract.*****Position Details:****Hours:** Wednesday – Saturday**;** although holiday coverage may necessitate additional days or changes in coverage days.
