Forsyth County's Tax Administration has an opening for a Sr. GIS Technician. The successful candidate will maintain cadastral base map layers in the Tax Assessor GIS, supporting the proper assessment and collection of property taxes.

Responsibilities

Maintain cadastral base map layers in the Tax Assessor GIS in support of property tax assessment and collection.

Perform detailed research and interpretation of documents from various sources to determine land parcel characteristics and ownership.

Integrate changes into existing GIS base map layers and the Assessment system, providing outputs of resulting data.

Execute GIS edits following standard procedures with high accuracy and minimal errors within prescribed time frames.

Lead and advise GIS Technicians on the performance of their work and task assignments.

Perform higher‑level GIS editing, analysis, and support maintenance of more critical or complicated data layers.

Complete special projects as assigned.

Provide knowledgeable assistance regarding GIS data to office staff, professionals, and the public, prioritizing customer service.

Assist the public or employees from other government departments in locating property in tax records and interpreting tax maps, appraisal cards, and other records.

Train new workers in edit and entry procedures; train all workers on system updates.

Write production reports on employee progress.

Assign, prioritize, and monitor work; review completed work to ensure required information is entered correctly.

Plan, coordinate and implement work assignments and/or special projects.

Assist workers with problems or questions in preparing edit maps or entering data in the computer workstation.

Gather pertinent data to determine the ratio between actual land value (as reflected by revenue stamps) and the tax value of particular land.

Perform neighborhood delineation, changes, maintenance, documentation, and appraisal support.

Process and coordinate mapping involving annexations, deeds, zoning petitions, road name changes, and microfilming of old map books.

Prepare instructional manuals as needed.

Prepare comprehensive map sets for the Tax department, other County departments, and special requests from the public.

Resolve problems and make appropriate corrections.

Research problems concerning property titles, acreage, and boundaries.

Perform initial project testing to develop procedures and guidelines for other cartographers.

Use a graphic computer system to perform complex land survey drafting and special projects.

Perform complex cartography work within the computer mapping and appraisal sections.

Perform related property tax work as required.

Qualifications

Associate's degree with courses in math, geography, paralegal, drafting, or a related area and four years of experience in property mapping using ArcGIS or other comparable GIS software.

Prefer successful completion of IAAO Course 101 and 600, supplemented by coursework and seminars regarding the use of products by ESRI or other comparable organizations.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Driver's license is required.

Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Ability to coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the work of others.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and explain and assist others with those instructions.

Ability to compute areas from property descriptions and maps.

Ability to interpret deeds and transfer the pertinent data to maps.

Working knowledge of geographical areas and subdivisions in the county.

Considerable knowledge of terminology, methods, and forms used in keeping records of land titles.

Considerable knowledge of standard practices, materials, and equipment used in computerized land survey drafting and land database operations.
