Lead Payroll Specialist
– Remote – Nationwide
Overview The Lead Payroll Specialist owns and oversees the full payroll function, ensuring accurate and timely processing for all employees. This role serves as the subject‑matter expert for payroll operations, leads payroll workflows, ensures regulatory compliance, and partners closely with HR and Finance to support organizational goals.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Lead end‑to‑end payroll processing in a multi‑state/multi‑location environment
Review, approve, and audit payroll runs for accuracy and timeliness
Reconcile labor hours and analyze payroll and operational reports
Resolve complex payroll issues and serve as the escalation point
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
Prepare payroll journal entries and support audits (401(k), workers’ comp)
Administer and optimize payroll/HRIS systems (e.g., Paylocity)
Guide and support payroll team members while managing processing schedules
Collaborate with HR, Benefits, and Finance on compensation, deductions, and reporting
Required Skills and Qualifications
4+ years of payroll experience, including 1–2 years in a senior or lead role
Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, and wage & hour rules
Proficiency with Paylocity payroll software required
Payroll accounting experience including preparing journal entries
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Compensation The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $90,000 per year, depending on experience.
