Under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, we are seeking a skilled and motivated attorney to perform complex legal work across multiple areas of law in support of departmental operations and programs.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents

Provide oral and written legal advice to departmental management and staff

Analyze legislation, regulations, and policy proposals affecting departmental programs

Draft, review, and implement regulations in collaboration with departmental staff

Review contracts, leases, subpoenas, and departmental documents for legal sufficiency

Analyze and respond to California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests

Serve as liaison with the California Attorney General on litigation matters, including pleadings, discovery, and hearings

Represent the department in administrative proceedings and select court matters, as needed

Note: If selected for an interview, candidates will be required to submit two professional writing samples

Desirable Qualifications

Strong ability to research, analyze, and apply legal principles, facts, and precedents

Sound judgment and the ability to assess complex situations and adopt effective courses of action

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly present facts, law, and legal arguments

Experience drafting legal opinions, pleadings, regulations, rulings, and legislation

Ability to prepare professional correspondence explaining legal matters

Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and maintain trust and confidence

Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities
