About the Role Job summary Community Cleaner – NHS AfC Band 2

As a Cleaner, you will provide an effective and efficient cleaning service in line with NHS national standards of cleanliness. You will help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors. You’ll work independently, following cleaning schedules and infection prevention guidelines, and will be responsible for tasks such as dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and waste disposal.

Main duties of the job

Ensure safe use and storage of industrial equipment such as vacuum cleaners and water extraction machines

Adhere to safe working practices as outlined in Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) procedures

Work to a cleaning schedule, completing all allocated tasks (e.g. damp dusting, high and low level surfaces, vacuuming, mopping, carpet cleaning in clinics, offices, toilets/bathrooms, kitchens, corridors and general rooms, prioritising workload when necessary)

Complete cleanliness audit actions in a timely manner; ensure audits are signed and filed logically

Maintain appropriate stock levels of cleaning materials; ensure deliveries of store orders

Maintain water quality by flushing infrequently used outlets (e.g. taps, showers, toilets) and completing appropriate documentation

Remove general, recycled, and clinical waste and dispose of it in the appropriate compound

Report building or equipment faults and repairs to clinical or departmental leads, building custodians, or via the Facilities Service Desk or line manager

Maintain building security where necessary (e.g. setting alarms); the role may include being assigned as the allocated key holder

Adhere to the lone working policy where applicable

Sign in and out when entering the building (where applicable)

Complete personal timesheet where necessary

Raise matters of non-compliance to clinical or departmental leads, building custodians, or line manager

Person Specification Qualifications Essential

NVQ Level 1 in cleaning and support services or equivalent experience, or willingness to work towards it

NVQ Level 2 in cleaning and support services or equivalent experience

Desirable

Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety (or willingness to work towards it during a 6‑month probationary period)

Allergen Level 2 Certification (or willingness to work towards it during a 6‑month probationary period)

Knowledge Essential

Good interpersonal and communications skills

Experience of using a smartphone

Desirable

Basic knowledge of IT systems (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook)
