Job Summary The Barber Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional will collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other stakeholders to support laboratory and research functions, especially animal work and routine laboratory administration. They will perform experiments, analyze research, and manage support of analytical testing processes. The role focuses on neuroscience and mouse model research.
Key Responsibilities
Perform Research Experiments and Maintain Mouse Research (60%)
Colony Management: Maintenance of breeders, weanlings, euthanasia, monitoring of sick/injured mice, weaning, genotyping, ear tagging, colony size control, cage card requests.
Colony Paperwork: Spreadsheet maintenance, bi‑weekly census, updates on breeding status, genotypes, billing accuracy, purge of old animals.
Monthly colony census and breeder planning.
Provide services such as surgical assistance, hypoxia monitoring, and mouse behavior assessments; animal care related to research studies.
Laboratory tasks: solution preparation, mouse brain sectioning, slide mounting, staining, microscopy, image analysis as directed by Dr. Barber.
Pre‑analytical, analytical, post‑analytical test processes and evaluation of results.
Update written protocols, inventories, and lab notebooks.
Execute Routine Lab Tasks (20%)
Biohazardous waste disposal, safety procedures, equipment maintenance per CU Biosafety guidelines.
Maintain inventories of supplies and samples.
Protocol assistance and enrollment of new participants.
Daily lab preparation: stocking, safety, cleanliness.
Transport and maintain results, samples, documents.
Dispose of materials per established guidelines.
Order supplies and maintain custom reagents.
Review and implement lab support policies and programs.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, guidelines, and escalation protocols.
Communicate Data Procedures, Results, and Next Steps (20%)
Perform basic data quality checks.
Troubleshoot experimental issues with supervisor.
Present data at meetings with PI and lab members.
Coordinate meetings with lab personnel and follow‑up communications.
Expand knowledge of in‑house genotyping, lines, experiments, genetics, strain creation.
Review and process logs, documents, databases.
Research issues and develop recommendations to resolve processes.
Work Location Onsite – Aurora, CO

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, pre‑medicine, engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a research wet laboratory or animal handling (mice).
RNA isolation, qPCR, protein isolation, western blots, enzyme assays, ELISA.
Cell culture, tissue preparation, cryopreservation.
Coursework in molecular biology, neuroscience.
Statistics, computational biology, data science or AI in health.
R or GraphPad Prism usage.
Advanced spreadsheet skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
Human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Strong written and verbal communication.
Ability to work across institutional levels and collaborate.
Follow verbal and written directions.
Attention to detail and protocol mastery.
Independent troubleshooting and problem solving.
Basic computer and math skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Organizational skills for inventory and administrative tasks.
