Position Summary The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is an individual with clinical and medical skills, with expertise in the care of Radiation Oncology patients. The APP completes comprehensive patient health evaluations (biological, social, and psychological assessments), considers co-morbid conditions and overall disposition, in collaboration with the appropriate clinical/faculty team. The APP assesses and coordinates educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers. The APP develops and reviews the plan of care with other clinical team members, participates in directing that care, and coordinates disposition planning and follow-up as applicable. The APP participates in resident and medical/nursing student education and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It may include providing healthcare services in accordance with state law and licensing/certification requirements and hospital privileges, where applicable.

Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a master's degree in nursing.

National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.

Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.

American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.

Experience:

Radiation Oncology/Hematology Oncology, acute care, internal medicine experience preferred.

Eligible new graduates will be considered.

Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree as Physician Assistant required.

Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program required.

Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.

Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.

Radiation Oncology/Hematology Oncology, acute care, internal medicine experience preferred.

Eligible new graduates will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications Education, Certification, and/ or Licensure:

NP/PA-specific certifications as noted (e.g., OCN or AOCN preferred for NP).

Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.

Core Duties and Responsibilities The statements describe the general nature of work and are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families undergoing radiation therapy in ambulatory and/or inpatient settings.

Complete daily rounds; perform pre-treatment or pre-procedure evaluations in radiation oncology; participate in ambulatory clinic and/or inpatient rounds as applicable.

Complete integrated assessments and coordinate orders for additional tests or consults as appropriate.

Perform and communicate diagnostic test results following established guidelines and scope of practice.

Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.

Document succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations in the medical record and develop an individualized plan of care with disposition planning and follow-up, as applicable.

Collaborate with radiation oncology faculty to follow established clinical guidelines and protocols; order tests or referrals as needed.

Perform necessary procedures following SOPs and guidelines.

Coordinate patient disposition planning and follow-up, including referrals to other care team members as needed.

Demonstrate expertise across the age continuum and participate in patient consultations and ongoing evaluations.

Additional Responsibilities

Identify unstable or complex radiation oncology patient care situations and facilitate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.

Recognize emergencies and initiate appropriate care; participate in and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.

Contribute to teaching, education of staff, students, patients, and families; promote learning and evaluate teaching effectiveness.

Mentor nursing personnel; participate in community programs and dissemination of information within area of expertise.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated care.

Document the plan of care and all interventions clearly in the medical record; ensure compliance with policies and standards.

Participate in performance improvement activities and apply findings to improve care.

Support committees, project work, and inter-disciplinary program development in radiation oncology.

Assist in data collection for outcomes and participate in clinical trials and research studies as applicable.
