Position Highlights The University of Arizona is seeking a dynamic Police Radio Dispatcher for the University Police Department. Dispatchers are skilled emergency service workers. The role involves receiving emergency 911 and non‑emergency calls, taking and entering information from callers, determining the nature/urgency of calls, initiating police or other emergency personnel action, and maintaining close contact with field units to monitor response and support requirements. The dispatcher works a flexible 24‑hour schedule, including weekend, evening, and holiday shifts. Compensation follows a step plan beginning at $21.635. Duties & Responsibilities

Receives and transmits routine and emergency telephone and radio traffic, dispatching and coordinating police, fire, animal control, and other services.

Monitors alarm panels, cameras, and public safety personnel activity via police radio.

Processes and evaluates information, prioritizes calls, and dispatches appropriate units.

Relays pertinent information in a factual, concise manner, including instructions or inquiries from remote units.

Monitors and enters statuses, locations, and activity of public safety personnel on a computer‑aided dispatch (CAD) system.

Operates computer terminal to query databases for motor vehicle information and other criminal records.

Enters data from officer reports into the criminal information system.

Maintains and accesses sensitive data in local, state, and national databases for investigative purposes.

Monitors teletype messages and relays important information to officers.

Utilizes technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fax machines, and other communication equipment.

Maintains security and confidentiality of information.

Keeps accurate records, including handwritten logs, at a quick pace.

Remains informed of departmental regulations, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge of applicable State and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes, regulations, and dispatching governance.

Knowledge of Department policies and procedures.

Skill in determining priorities and handling high‑pressure situations.

Skill in observing situations analytically and objectively, recording them clearly.

Skill in communicating clearly, concisely, and accurately.

Skill in written communication and high‑accuracy typing.

Skill in handling high volume of telephone calls and quick decision‑making during emergencies.

Skill in assessing, analyzing, identifying, and implementing solutions to complex problems.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Skill in handling situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.

Skill in recalling numerous details and essential information.

Skill in operating radio, telephone, keyboard, computer terminal, and related equipment.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Ability to create and maintain manual and automated logs and other records of public‑safety communications.

Ability to read and interpret maps to determine locations.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Successful completion of computerized and oral examinations, background investigation, psychological exam, polygraph, and hearing test.

Acceptance of shift assignments and overtime, with flexible schedule for weekend, evening, and holiday shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

Department may accept less than 5 years of experience based on applicant’s work history.
