Senior Patient Safety & Quality Consultant – Patient Safety Program – Hybrid
Location:
Richmond, VA (Hybrid: 3 days in‑office, 2 days remote)
Salary Range:
$80,600 – $115,000 per year
Job Overview The Senior Patient Safety and Quality Consultant (PSQC) plays a central role in advancing patient safety and quality improvement across VCU Health at the system level. The PSQC leads key initiatives such as Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI), safety event review, root cause analyses, and medical staff quality programs. The role fosters a culture of safety, utilizes data analytics, facilitates risk assessments, improves care transitions, and serves as a consultant and liaison to medical centre teams.

Key Responsibilities
Use proven methods to facilitate improvement initiatives: performance and process improvement tools, change management methodology, project management tactics.
Leverage data analytics to guide decision‑making and inform improvement initiatives: design and implement data structures, integrate data from multiple sources, use statistical and data visualization methods.
Cultivate a safe healthcare environment by promoting safe practices, nurturing a just culture, and improving processes that detect, mitigate or prevent harm: facilitate root cause analyses and FMEAs, incorporate high‑reliability principles, promote psychological safety through data transparency.
Evaluate and improve healthcare processes and care transitions to advance the safe, equitable, efficient, effective, and timely care of a diverse patient population: integrate population health strategies, apply a holistic approach, collaborate to improve care processes and transitions.
Maintain & update knowledge base: complete required continuing education and maintain certifications.
Employment Qualifications
Required Education:
Master’s Degree in a healthcare field (MSHA, MPH, MSN, MHA, etc.) or current enrollment in a master’s program.
Preferred Education:
None.
Licensure/Certification Required:
Current license in Virginia if holding a professional license (RN, Pharmacist, NP, RD, etc.).
Preferred Certifications:
Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS), Certified Project Manager (PMP), Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
Required within 1 year:
CPHQ or CPPS.
Minimum Experience:
4+ years in patient safety/quality, process improvement, or project management; experience leading change initiatives in a large, complex health care system; proficiency with Microsoft Office, MS Project, Visio.
Preferred Experience:
Academic medical centre environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience with statistical process control tools, facilitation, data collection design, cultural responsiveness, diversity, equity and inclusion commitment.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements High stress and fluctuating workloads may occur; general office environment; occasional car travel off‑site. Physical requirements include lifting/carrying (0‑50 lbs), pushing/pulling (0‑50 lbs), bending, manual dexterity, repetitive arm/hand movements. Emotional demands include fast‑paced environment, adaptability and ability to handle multiple priorities.
