The Fleet Mechanic I is responsible for supporting the Fleet Administration and Services Division by performing routine maintenance and repair work on a wide range of county‑owned vehicles and equipment, including emergency response and law enforcement vehicles. The primary areas of responsibility include conducting preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and minor mechanical repairs on vehicles no longer under warranty, as well as assisting with troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues. This position also involves performing minor bodywork, welding and fabricating parts, operating shop tools and diagnostic equipment, and maintaining compliance with safety standards and repair documentation requirements. Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Director of Fleet Administration and Services based on the quality and timeliness of repair and maintenance tasks, ability to accurately diagnose and resolve equipment issues, adherence to safety and procurement procedures, knowledge and proficiency in vehicle repair practices, and effectiveness in supporting the operational readiness of the County’s fleet.

Responsibilities

Performs routine preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, tire repairs, fluid checks, and scheduled safety inspections to ensure proper operation.

Conducts general maintenance and repair work on vehicle systems including electrical, cooling, suspension, braking, heating, and air conditioning components.

Assists with troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues to determine appropriate repairs and corrective actions.

Completes minor bodywork and painting as needed to maintain fleet vehicles in safe and serviceable condition.

Performs welding and metal fabrication tasks to repair or replace parts, components, and equipment as required.

Assists with the repair and rebuilding of transmissions, drive train components, and steering systems under the direction of senior staff.

Operates automotive diagnostic tools, computer balancing equipment, and a variety of shop equipment including hoists, welders, lathes, milling machines, and drill presses.

Travels to various locations to complete field repairs or tow disabled vehicles back to the fleet shop when necessary.

Ensures tools and shop equipment are maintained in safe working conditions and properly stored.

Maintains accurate records of repair and maintenance activities, inspections, and parts used in compliance with county procurement and safety requirements.

Cleans and maintains the fleet shop in accordance with safety and OSHA standards.

Responds promptly to maintenance requests and repair needs to support operational readiness of county fleet, emergency response, and law enforcement vehicles.

Ensures compliance with all applicable safety procedures, Tennessee Department of Transportation regulations, and county fleet policies.

Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

Required

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) and to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.

Ability to pass a physical and drug screen administered through a licensed physician.

Supervisory Requirements This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Competencies

Knowledge of fleet vehicle maintenance and repair practices, including engines, drive trains, suspension, brakes, tires, fuel and exhaust systems, and electrical systems.

Knowledge of Tennessee Department of Transportation and OSHA safety regulations related to fleet maintenance operations.

Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication techniques, including safe use of torches and welding equipment.

Ability to operate, maintain, and safely use automotive diagnostic tools, power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment such as hoists, lathes, and milling machines.

Ability to apply standard operating procedures and safety guidelines consistently and effectively.

Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills to identify and resolve vehicle and equipment issues.

Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, and technical instructions.

Organizational and decision‑making skills to prioritize and complete repairs in a timely and accurate manner.

Ability to maintain accurate repair records, parts documentation, and inventory control.

Effectiveness in communicating clearly and respectfully with co‑workers, supervisors, and the public.

Physical Demands

This is a heavy work position requiring the exertion of up to 150 pounds occasionally, up to 75 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds constantly.

Work involves frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and lifting to perform mechanical and repair tasks, such as removing and installing vehicle parts, handling tires and wheels, and operating shop equipment.

Work requires the ability to access, maneuver around, and work beneath vehicles and equipment in both shop and field environments.

Work may involve extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, or lying in awkward positions to complete repairs, preventive maintenance, or inspections.

Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination are required to operate diagnostic tools, welding equipment, power tools, and heavy shop machinery.

Vocal communication is required for exchanging information with coworkers, supervisors, and others in the performance of repair and maintenance duties.

Hearing is required to perceive diagnostic sounds, detect equipment malfunctions, and communicate effectively in a high‑noise shop or field environment.

Visual acuity at a level sufficient for close inspection, depth perception, color recognition, and the ability to adjust focus is required to identify worn or damaged parts, read schematics and manuals, and ensure accuracy of repair work.

The position requires stamina, agility, and physical strength to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, often in outdoor environments and in adverse weather conditions.

Work Environment

Operates primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment with frequent work performed outdoors in the field; exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, oils, grease, and other substances common to vehicle repair operations.

Frequent work in outdoor weather conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow, while conducting roadside repairs, towing, or inspections.

Work regularly involves exposure to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, welding operations, hydraulic systems, and tools used for maintenance and repair activities.

General hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM; occasional extended hours, evening, weekend, and emergency call‑back work may be required to support county operations and emergency response needs.

Travel between county-owned sites and various field locations is necessary, and reliable transportation is required.
