About the Role
KCS is seeking a skilled and experienced Fleet Mechanic & Equipment Manager to oversee maintenance, repair, and management of our multi-location fleet. This position is responsible for keeping all company-owned vehicles, equipment, and tools in safe, reliable, and cost-efficient condition.
This is a hands‑on role for someone who thrives in both shop and field environments, is highly organized, and can manage fleet logistics across various divisions and locations.
Key Responsibilities Fleet & Equipment Maintenance
Diagnose and repair company vehicles, trucks, and trailers.
Service heavy/light construction equipment (mini excavators, skid steers, loaders, telehandlers, etc.).
Repair small engines and tools (generators, saws, pumps, compactors).
Manage preventive maintenance schedules to reduce downtime.
Respond to field repairs across Tennessee and the surrounding areas.
Fleet Management & Logistics
Oversee all vehicles, trailers, and equipment across the KCS divisions.
Track equipment utilization and ensure accurate record‑keeping.
Coordinate equipment transport and operate machinery as needed.
Enforce equipment usage and accountability policies.
Procurement & Inventory Control
Manage parts and consumable inventory.
Source and price new equipment, tools, and fleet vehicles.
Build vendor relationships and negotiate pricing.
Track and report fleet‑related expenditures.
Shop & Field Operations
Maintain safe, organized shop environments in three locations.
Work with division leaders to prioritize repairs and schedules.
Travel to job sites as needed for inspections or repairs.
Ensure DOT compliance and vehicle documentation.
Leadership & Reporting
Establish preventive maintenance programs and inspection standards.
Train and mentor future shop personnel.
Recommend improvements in fleet utilization and procurement strategies.
Provide monthly reports to the COO.
Qualifications Experience
Minimum 5 years of professional mechanic experience (construction/heavy equipment preferred).
Technical Skills
Diesel/gas engine diagnostics
Hydraulic & electrical systems
Construction equipment repair
Diagnostic software & maintenance tracking systems
Operational Skills
Fleet logistics & equipment inventory management
Vendor negotiation & cost control
Ability to pull trailers and operate machinery
Other Requirements
Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain)
Ability to travel between shop locations
