Job Description Licensed Opticians are responsible for selling and dispensing eyewear and accessories to patients. They ensure patients receive the right‑size frames that fit their needs and lifestyle, dispense lenses with correct prescriptions and measurements, and provide exceptional customer service.
Responsibilities
Deliver extraordinary experience to each patient and explain customized recommendations for products and services.
Custom fit glasses and precisely place prescriptions in lenses.
Develop own clientele through outstanding service and referrals.
Assist co‑workers with difficult or complex product and prescription needs.
Stay current on company/industry products, procedures, manufacturer rebates, and lens/frame options.
Handle patient calls, update status of orders, resolve issues, and, if needed, escalate to Store Manager.
Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records.
Assist patients in selecting frames, lens type, and treatments (tints, coatings) based on specific needs and facial measurements.
Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
Collect eye and face measurements to ensure proper fit.
Interpret prescriptions from optometrist and ophthalmologist.
Create work orders for lab technicians, specifying required lens details.
Follow up on all pending orders, verify timing, and inform patients of any delays.
Dispense glasses by inspecting product, checking fit, adjusting, and soliciting feedback.
Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit, and patient comfort using various tools.
Operate tools such as pupilometers, PD sticks, lensometers, pliers, wrenches, and frame warmers.
Communicate with technicians and/or store managers about patient information or order status.
Inspect final product, ensure no flaws, and clean/polish lenses with cloths and solvents.
Maintain cleanliness of frame boards, displays, mirrors, workbench, office area, bathroom, and breakroom.
Restock retail boards with new merchandise.
Understand product issues, analyze problems, and accurately answer patient questions on insurance, warranties, pricing, upgrades, and promotions.
Collaborate with technicians, front desk associates, managers, and optometrist.
Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supply, sunglasses, and safety glasses.
Requirements
High School Diploma.
State Licensure.
Optical dispensing experience.
Minimum one‑year experience as an optician strongly preferred.
Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills and pleasant demeanor; experience with sales preferred.
Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
Dependability and punctuality.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand up to 8 hours a day.
