Environmental Compliance Specialist Overview

– Tanaq Environmental, LLC. (TEL) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to local, state, and federal agencies in the areas of hazardous & toxic waste restoration and military munitions site management. TEL is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving federal customers while giving back to the Alaskan native community and shareholders.

– Full‑time

Location

– Fully remote (any U.S.). Estimated travel 25–40% annually within the United States, depending on project requirements.

About the Role Drive compliance of project sites with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permits, and plans. Work primarily on projects with federal contracts, requiring strong knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, NEPA, and agency‑specific requirements (e.g., EPA, USACE). Responsibilities include developing and implementing compliance plans, conducting site inspections, preparing reports, and interacting with regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

Prepare plans, permit applications, and reports for environmental compliance areas such as the Clean Water Act (Sections 401, 402, 404), NPDES/Stormwater, SPCC / Oil Pollution Act, storage‑tank management programs, RCRA, EPCRA, solid waste, air quality, and wastewater programs.

Provide multimedia environmental support and assessment of facility operations to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, permits, and plans, including on‑site assistance as needed.

Identify potential compliance issues and offer recommendations for corrective actions in technical reports and through oral communication.

Deliver client support by providing training on various environmental compliance topics, in‑person or online, as directed by the project manager.

Requirements

Minimum 3–5 years of experience in multimedia environmental compliance consulting.

Working knowledge of environmental regulations and standards (e.g., Clean Water Act, 40 CFR 112 – Oil Pollution Prevention/ SPCC, NPDES/Stormwater, EPCRA).

Strong understanding of RCRA hazardous waste regulations, including solid waste definitions, hazardous waste listing/characteristics, and EPA waste determination requirements.

Ability to perform accurate waste profiling using analytical data, SDS review, and process knowledge.

Experience in environmental management systems and ISO 14001 standards is a plus.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.

Organizational skills and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations with a consistently high level of quality and accuracy.

Professional demeanor with a positive, solution‑seeking attitude and personal responsibility.

Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clear driving record.

Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations.

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Education and Training

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences or an engineering discipline.

Physical Requirements

Must be able and willing to travel to job sites, attend client meetings, and/or attend conferences, typically 25–40% annually.

Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and varying conditions (heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, vibration).

Must perform physical activities associated with field work (walking long distances, climbing ladders, carrying equipment, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching).

Often required to stand/walk and lift less than 25–50 lb. Occasionally required to lift 50–75 lb.

Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, boots, hard hats, hearing protection, respirator) may be required.

Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
