Responsibilities A. POSITION SUMMARY: Performs the primary function of a professional nurse in assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating nursing care provided to patients. Responsible for interacting with hospital staff and other ancillary departments regarding patient care, concerns, and conflicts by identifying and assisting in the resolution of issues. This position will operate during its shift without the assistance of a unit clerk, respiratory therapy, stroke team, OB support, code‑blue support, phlebotomy or house supervisor.

FED registered nurses are responsible for, but not limited to, ventilator management, lab draws including ABGs, placing phone calls and receiving/answering phone calls, paging on call resources, responding/activating code blue, and housekeeping as needed. Nurses must be responsible and accountable for maintaining performance skills and for working weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, overtime, and on an on‑call or on‑call‑back status.

Qualifications

Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Texas.

Willingness to be cross‑trained to other unit areas.

Commitment to STHS’s Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, including compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training, and immediate reporting of suspected compliance issues to the Compliance Officer.

Education / Licensure

Registered Nurse currently licensed in the State of Texas, or part of a compact state license, or holds a valid temporary RN license for the State of Texas while awaiting the permanent license.

Effective January 6, 2012, must possess an associate degree, baccalaureate degree, or diploma from a school of nursing or university. New graduate RN’s may provide documentation from their RN program validating completion of nursing program requirements.

Required Certification

XBCLS/CPR – Must be current upon hire and thereafter.

XACLS – Required for FED RN. For RN with one year or less of experience, may obtain within 12 months of hire; for RN with over one year of experience, may obtain within 6 months of hire.

XPALS – Same requirements as XACLS.

XNRP – Same requirements as XACLS.

XTNCC (TNCC) – Same requirements as XACLS.

XCPI – Same requirements as XACLS.

Applicants must be familiar with basic nursing performance standards as outlined in the Texas Nurse Practice Act.

Must pass the Medication Assessment within three months of starting in the department.
