TEXTILES/MATERIALS ENGINEER
for our client in Troy, MI.
Are you passionate about how materials perform, interact, and ultimately shape the customer experience inside a vehicle? A global Tier-1 automotive organization is seeking a Textile / Materials Engineer to become a key technical authority for interior trim materials and lamination systems.
In this role, you’ll help define material strategies used across multiple vehicle platforms—working hands-on with cutting‑edge textiles, polymers, and surface materials while collaborating with OEMs, suppliers, and internal engineering teams worldwide.
*This is a % on‑site role.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Build, maintain, and evolve a comprehensive materials benchmarking and performance database for automotive interior trim materials
Evaluate and recommend materials such as leather, fabric, vinyl, urethane, carpet, and composite laminates based on customer and program requirements
Partner directly with OEM engineering teams to support construction drawing approvals and material selections
Lead material validation efforts for new suppliers, new technologies, and cost‑reduction initiatives
Support the development and release of material specifications and standards
Participate in product testing, manufacturing reviews, and development trials
Lead or support root cause investigations related to material failures, warranty concerns, and field issues
Establish best practices and drive standardization for material selection and lamination processes
Provide technical input during program quoting and feasibility assessments
Collaborate closely with manufacturing, purchasing, supplier quality, and product engineering teams
Collect, analyze, and present data for internal reviews and customer‑facing discussions
Facilitate cross‑functional technical reviews and problem‑solving sessions
What We Are Looking For:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline
5+ years of experience in materials engineering, textile engineering, or process engineering
Hands‑on experience with vinyl, synthetic, and non‑synthetic materials
Background in automotive interiors or Tier‑1 manufacturing environments strongly preferred
Strong analytical mindset with proven problem‑solving capabilities
Ability to translate complex material behavior into clear technical recommendations
Excellent communication skills and confidence working directly with OEM customers
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently while thriving in cross‑functional engineering teams
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and material testing/documentation tools
Willingness to travel up to 20%
