Description and Essential Functions
To drive, load and unload vehicles in the delivery of materials for an assigned department; and to perform other related duties as assigned.
Note: Current vacancy will be assigned to the Fire Department.
Essential Functions
Perform routine vehicle checks and make minor repairs as needed.
Record daily activities on a log and keep supervisor informed on location.
Perform courier services.
Organize work, set priorities and follow up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer services.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
When assigned to the Fire Department (in addition to the above):
Drive a van making daily delivery of Fire Department supplies, equipment and materials.
Store, maintain and distribute uniforms and equipment.
Receive, unload, and inspect shipments for damage and conformity to purchase order specifications and packing slips.
Shelve and store items received in the appropriate section of the warehouse according to identifying information such as size, type, style or code.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be one year of responsible related experience and formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver's license and good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
Methods and practices of delivering goods to different sites.
Map reading techniques.
Safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Good customer service skills.
Modern office practices and procedures.
Computer equipment and software applications related to assignment.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Abilities include:
Drive city vehicles observing legal and defensive driving policies.
Read street maps; follow directions; be punctual; maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.
Maintain contact with assigned supervisor regarding different stops throughout the day.
Learn pertinent rules, laws and policies relative to area of assignment.
Carry a cell phone and readily communicate with designated staff throughout the day and record daily activities on a daily log.
Prioritize and coordinate several work activities.
Research, organize, and maintain accurate office files.
Work effectively at remote locations without direct supervision.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Continuous walking and sitting for long periods. Intermittently twist and reach above shoulders and below knees carrying items weighing up to 20 lbs.; use telephone, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means; lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 100 pounds. Sight and hearing within normal range. Work performed indoors in a carpeted and air‑conditioned office environment with fluorescent lighting and moderate noise level. Exposure to outside atmospheric conditions, traffic, and noise when driving. Work frequently disrupted by the need to respond to in‑person and telephone inquiries.
Additional Information To be considered, applicants must submit a City Application by 5:00 p.m. on the closing date listed. Candidates whose applications indicate education and experience most directly related to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process. All notices will be sent via e-mail.
Participants must achieve a passing score at each step of the selection process to be placed on the eligibility list. An in‑person written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of February 1, 2026. The eligibility list will last for six months unless extended.
