TOWN OF NARRAGANSETT Title: Wastewater Plant Operator I Person performs a variety of technical, semi‑skilled and labor work in the daily operation and maintenance of a municipal sewage treatment plant and collection system.

Work is generally performed under the general direction and administration of the Wastewater Superintendent in addition to the supervision of the Process Controller/Pretreatment Coordinator, the Maintenance Superintendent and/or the Foreman.

On‑the‑Job training will be provided for individuals new to the industry for a 6‑month probationary period.

Essential Functions

Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent

Monitors, interprets information from SCADA system and records flows

Operates daily solid handling facilities

Collects and conducts analysis on samples

Transfers analysis results to appropriate reports

Maintains grounds, buildings, pumping stations and collection system

Checks, maintains and performs required repairs on the collection system

Subject to stand‑by, weekend shifts, and call‑backs

Attends job‑related classes and seminars

Applies safe working procedures and the use of protective equipment

Mixes chemicals

Assists with pump station operations and maintenance, as needed

Performs related work as required, as well as other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor and that are not inconsistent with this position

Critical Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

Heavy lifting required

Ability to work in tight quarters, climb ladders at varying heights

Ability to operate different types of machinery and work with hand tools

Ability to perform wastewater related sampling and laboratory analysis

Ability to maintain accurate records

Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and to work effectively with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment

Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with other employees, departments, regulatory agencies and the general public

Knowledge of general math, science, and mechanics as it relates to the hydraulics and chemistry relating to plant control and maintaining its operation in optimum conditions

Knowledge of methods, techniques, and equipment utilized in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities (i.e. meters, gauges, motors, pumps, power driven tools and equipment)

Preferred familiar with and able to operate the following

Laboratory equipment

Jet spray, gas detector, pumps, generators, control panels, process equipment, tank truck, compressors, gravity belt thickener, sewer camera inspection equipment

Minimum Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED

One (1) year experience working at a secondary wastewater treatment facility, and/or equivalent technical experience in the wastewater industry preferred

Valid Grade I Rhode Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, obtained through examination or reciprocity OR the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year

Valid Rhode Island Driver’s License, with no restrictions that would limit or adversely affect insurability

Physical Environment/Working Conditions/Physical Demands

The work environment may be within an office setting or a field setting, including construction sites and high traffic zones

Working conditions may vary from moderate temperatures and light (office environment) to inclement weather and night (field environment).

The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals and may work near moving mechanical parts

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy

The employee may routinely lift and/or move objects up to ninety (90) pounds, and may climb or crawl into and out of limited access areas such as pumping stations and associated wastewater collection system confined spaces

The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms

The employee is frequently required to climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
