Hybrid work environment. Office requirement is approximately 35%. As a community foundation with a statewide focus, community context is an integral aspect of creating effective strategies to achieve the Foundation’s mission. As such, the incumbent to this position must reside within the state of Minnesota and within commutable distance to the WFM office in Minneapolis.

SUMMARY The Senior Accountant will work collaboratively to manage the financial health and sustainability of the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota (WFM). This includes month‑end and year‑end close processes, ongoing financial reporting and analysis, annual audit and 990 management, budget and forecasting insight contribution, monthly bank reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable processes, and holding vendor relationships.

In partnership with the Director of Finance & Technology, the Senior Accountant will work across departments and identify opportunities to reduce expenses, streamline processes and improve efficiency. The Senior Accountant helps to ensure the accuracy of all transactions and confidentiality of information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ROLE SPECIFIC

Manage the reconciliations, financial statements, compliance, audits, controls, and organizational reporting. (65%)

Communicate regularly with the Director of Finance & Technology

Oversee month‑end and year‑end closing expense processes, ensuring accurate and timely closing of accounts.

Reconcile bank accounts monthly

Reconcile investment accounts monthly and private equity accounts quarterly.

Prepare journal entries, including adjustments and closing entries.

Prepare and analyze financial statements (e.g. balance sheet, income statements) ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP.

Prepare analysis and insights of financial data to support decision‑making.

Identify cost‑saving opportunities and recommend strategies for expense reduction.

Provide monthly reports for staff to support financial literacy and engagement through budget vs actual reviews.

Release restricted funds per grant agreements and donor documentation.

Continually seek and implement opportunities to improve finance and accounting operations through technology.

Lead the annual audit and 990 by liaising with auditors, preparing schedules and communicating needs to staff.

In partnership with the Director of Finance and Technology, manage financial file management, system implementation, and analysis for annual budgeting and forecasting.

Ensure implementation of financial controls.

Ensure compliance with accounting standards (GAAP), tax regulations, and company financial policies.

Evaluate and monitor internal controls, identifying and mitigating risks.

Review, update, and comply with the Financial and Accounting Policies and Procedures.

2. Lead accounts payable and accounts receivable processes to ensure timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions for the Foundation. (25%)

Lead accounts payable processes, preparing all invoices/bills for payment, maintaining supporting documentation, following applicable contracts/agreements and ensuring approvals through Blackbaud Expense Management tool.

Process the grant payments from Foundation Cloud.

Manage accounts receivable processes in Financial Edge.

Prepare and deposit paper check receivables.

Manage and track pledges and grants receivable including reconciliation of balances between Financial Edge and the restricted net asset workbook.

Obtain receipts and accurately code all transactions from individual corporate card holders.

3. Process payroll to ensure the timely and accurate processing of employee wages, deductions, and tax payments while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. (5%)

Verify employee timesheets are completed in a timely manner with proper coding.

Prepare bi‑weekly payroll for approval and pay bi‑weekly benefits (e.g. Optum, etc.).

Create payroll journal entries, with accurate coding and upload to accounting system for approval.

Prepare quarterly time and attendance reports for department head review.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ORGANIZATIONAL (5%)

Participate as an active member of the Foundation staff by working collaboratively with other staff members and communicating openly and honestly.

Perform all other projects and tasks assigned by the Director of Finance & Technology.

Actively participate in WFM’s learning culture in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Attend Women’s Foundation of Minnesota events, as requested by the Director of Finance & Technology or Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS Desired Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business, preferred.

At least five years’ progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization or association.

Experience overseeing the annual audit.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Proficiency with cloud‑based financial management systems.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365 with expertise in Excel required.

Strong aptitude for learning software tools.

Passion for innovation and curiosity for improvement of workflows.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain financial terms in simple language.

Hear and speak in order to use telephone and communicate with people both in and out of the office environment.

Sit at a desk for extended periods.

Apply manual dexterity for computer keyboarding and office equipment use.

Flexible work hours requiring work in excess of 40 hours/week when necessary.

Must be willing and able to work and attend events on evenings and weekends as needed.

Tools and Equipment Used

This position requires the use of a company‑based laptop, multi‑line telephone application, calculator, copy machine, and other office equipment.

Blackbaud software includes Financial Edge accounting software, Raiser’s Edge donor software, Foundation Cloud grantmaking software, Microsoft 365, and other software and applications.
