Position Title:
Outside Sales Representative
Reports to: General Manager
Classification: Commission
Department: Outside Sales
Purpose of Position: Attain sales and gross margin objectives for an assigned territory by developing and maintaining a customer base to increase the company’s sales and profits.
Essential Functions:
Develop new customer accounts through cold calls, working potential customer lists, contacting subcontractors in the area, and contacting companies that previously rejected proposals
Work with the Credit Manager to verify business potential and credit worthiness of new accounts
Sell and service established contractor and commercial accounts; visit customer’s office or job site and deliver small items
Negotiate pricing levels to encourage business while maximizing gross profit
Create a partnership with the customer; recommend products and services offered by the company to increase the customer’s efficiency and profitability
Accurately estimate materials needed by customer (blueprint take‑off); suggest add‑on merchandise
Recommend adjustments to current product line and pricing to the Store Manager to remain competitive
Input quotes, estimates, and orders into the company computer system
Schedule the delivery of customer orders when needed
Verify merchandise on‑hand quantities with required ship dates, notifying the Store Manager of any inventory needs
Handle special orders using company policy, including contacting the vendor to quote and order merchandise, verifying that the customer has signed the confirmation; all completely filled out paperwork is submitted to the Sales Coordinator
Participate in local building materials and construction related organizations and associations
Comply with specified company dress code
Attend and participate in all company sponsored training programs as required
Follow the company’s safety policies as outlined in the company safety program
Assist supervisor or other employees as needed
Perform any other task or duty assigned by the supervisor or manager
Education:
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED)
Experience:
Three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Basic computer skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations
Ability to write reports and business correspondence
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
Ability to calculate figures and amounts; discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, volume, circumference, and other basic geometrical concepts
Strong organizational skills
Strong analytical reasoning and judgment to quickly solve customer service issues
Knowledge of building materials products
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication ability, sales aptitude, and customer service
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand or sit for up to four hours at a time
Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to see within normal range of vision with or without corrective lenses.
Must be able to use hands, wrists, and fingers repetitively.
Must have exceptional eye‑hand coordination.
Must regularly be able to reach overhead.
Must regularly be able to squat, bend, twist, and stand.
Must be able to walk around regularly using steps occasionally.
Must be able to see within normal range of vision with or without corrective lenses.
Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach with manual dexterity.
Working Conditions: Occasionally works near moving parts and in outside weather conditions
