Location:
Various schools across the board’s jurisdiction (travel required). This will include monthly travel to schools in the North.
Effective Date:
Immediately (Non‑Union, 10‑month position – works September through June annually)
Under the direction of the Mental Health Leader, the Student and Family Counsellor will function as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing support services to students and families through consultation/assessment, crisis intervention, counselling, attendance investigation, community liaison/networking, prevention programming, professional development and child/family advocacy. In addition, s/he will provide the necessary professional skills to assist students in problem solving and conflict resolution in a safe and healthy manner to ensure student success. The successful candidate must be comfortable counselling virtually over a secure platform. They must be prepared to carry out duties in a face‑to‑face format, virtually, or using a combination of the two.
Requirements
Relevant graduate or undergraduate degree (e.g. BSW, MSW, Master in Counselling, or related)
Registered member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
Experience working and counselling virtually
Experience working with children/youth experiencing social/emotional difficulties
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently
Demonstrated ability to work with a multidisciplinary team
Good computer skills, including word processing, communications software, Internet and e‑mail
Excellent discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
Familiarity with the Ministry’s mental health and addictions strategies
Able to practice from a trauma‑informed approach
Act as a point person for behaviour crisis‑related responses when appropriate
Collaborate to develop alternatives/programming for students who are on long‑term suspension
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years working experience in the field
Native Specialization within Social Work or Counselling Degree Program
Experience in providing counselling services from an evidence‑informed practice perspective
Experience working with schools and/or learners at the elementary or secondary school level
Knowledge of the history of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and experience supporting Indigenous learners
