Position Summary:
Manhattan University seeks a talented, detail-driven Writer/Editor with a strong command of creative, narrative-driven storytelling, editorial strategy, and multi-channel content creation. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role brings Manhattan University’s people, programs, and mission to life crafting clear, compelling, and brand-aligned content across feature stories, press releases, web pages, speeches, magazine articles, official correspondence, and marketing collateral. The ideal candidate is an adaptable communicator who can transform complex information into engaging narratives, conduct insightful interviews, and shape stories that resonate with diverse audiences. A minimum of three years of professional writing and editing experience is required, along with the ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced higher‑education environment.
Job Responsibilities: Write, edit, and proofread high-quality content for print and digital platforms, including:
Feature stories, profiles, and magazine articles.
Press releases, public service announcements, and media advisories.
Webpages, landing pages, social media, and ad copy content.
Event programs, brochures, viewbooks, annual reports, and other marketing materials.
Official correspondence, talking points, and speeches for University leadership.
Video scripts and storytelling-driven multimedia content.
Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external partners for storytelling and promotional needs.
Serve as a contributing writer for the Manhattan University Magazine and other major institutional publications.
Ensure all content adheres to AP Style, MLA citations when applicable, and Manhattan University’s brand voice and editorial standards.
Proven ability to uncover compelling University stories and pitch them to local, regional, and national media, along with supporting PR narratives and outreach strategies when called upon.
Collaborate closely with designers, photographers, videographers, and campus partners to bring content from concept to completion.
Manage editorial calendars and contribute to strategic content planning across the Marketing Department.
Develop polished, engaging presentation materials and slide decks that support leadership communications and marketing initiatives.
Coordinate with printers, oversee proofing processes, and support production timelines for print publications.
Provide exceptional customer service and responsive communication to internal clients across academic and administrative units.
Attend campus events to gather stories, support media coverage, or produce same-day or next-day content.
Assist with crisis communications and time‑sensitive institutional messaging when needed.
Perform other duties as assigned, including occasional evening and weekend work to support major University events.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements:
One year of professional writing/editing experience.
Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and storytelling across multiple formats.
Strong command of AP Style and familiarity with MLA, paired with excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills.
Proven experience with magazine feature writing, editorial workflows, and interviewing.
Experience pitching stories and working with media outlets strongly preferred.
Ability to collaborate across departments and manage complex, deadline-driven projects.
Proficiency with content management systems, digital publishing tools, and collaborative project platforms.
Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to work collegially with diverse stakeholders.
Experience working with printers, managing print projects, and reviewing proofs.
Excellent proofreading skills for all collateral and marketing materials.
Superior customer service skills.
Strong project management skills.
Commitment to diverse storytelling across all mediums and platforms.
Preferred Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required (English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field preferred).
Experience directly within a higher education institution or in a similar educational/nonprofit communications role.
Working knowledge of ADA/WCAG accessibility standards and best practices for digital communications.
Familiarity with brand‑asset management systems, digital asset repositories, version control, and workflow automation.
Understanding of search engine optimization for digital publications.
