Job Description The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is a staff member of the Housing and Residence Life Department and is responsible for the overall quality of living in a college residence hall. The functional areas include living onsite, staff supervision, student development, community development, administration, building management, and general departmental responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities Staff Supervision
Participate in the recruitment, selection, and hiring process of RAs.
Facilitate and participate in RA training programs and provide for the ongoing training of RAs through staff development activities and daily supervision.
Supervise RAs in the performance of their responsibilities through one‑on‑one meetings, conducting weekly staff meetings, and ongoing evaluation of their performance.
Student Development
Consult individual residents on personal, academic, and social matters and assist and support them during personal crises related to their welfare or that of their family or friends.
Utilize college and community resources to refer residents to appropriate offices and programs that enhance personal growth and academic success.
Community Development
Ensure diverse and appropriate activities to meet the needs of residents and support RA staff members by attending floor activities.
Support, enforce, and interpret college policies and procedures; serve as a role model by abiding by these policies.
Conduct weekly safety and sanitary room inspections.
Administration and Building Management
Where applicable, maintain an effective desk operation through the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of work‑study students.
Coordinate and supervise the timely completion of all appropriate paperwork and reports, including incident reports, hall rosters, room condition reports, payroll timesheets, and work orders.
Maintain an effective working relationship with other hall directors and housing personnel.
Supervise the opening and closing of the residence hall in accordance with outlined procedures and instructions.
Maintain an accurate key inventory.
Establish a relationship with Campus Police and Physical Plant personnel to ensure all safety and security issues are addressed promptly.
Maintain office hours as directed by the Coordinator of Housing and Residence Life.
Conduct monthly fire drills.
Assume responsibility for hall safety and security, including ensuring the building is properly secured, supervising fire and safety procedures, providing leadership on emergencies, and informing the Housing office of potential security risks.
Perform all duties as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
