At The John Roan School we are relentless in our pursuit of excellence. We aim to ignite ambition in every student through teaching that empowers and inspires; a calm and disruption-free learning environment; and a strong character education programme. We have one overriding, audacious ambition that drives us - to be the very best school in the Greenwich area, giving confidence to parents and carers that their child will not only achieve their best academically, but also thrive in their time with us. Our school PRIDE ethos represents our expectations of everyone in our school and is at the core of everything that we do. Founded in 1677, The John Roan School is one of the oldest state schools in the country. The school is a mixed ability co-educational 11‑18 school set across two sites a short walk apart in the heart of Greenwich. We became part of United Learning in 2019, and we are already seeing the results of our continuing journey of rapid improvement. We are a proudly inclusive school with a Centre for Autism, a thriving SEND provision and growing numbers of students with English as an Additional Language. The John Roan School values personal development, and on joining the school you will have a wealth of opportunities to develop through our internal CPD programmes and within the United Learning group of schools. Our staff team is diverse and reflects the multi‑cultural student population of the school at all levels.

The John Roan School is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England. United Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All positions are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and shortlisted candidates will be subject to an online check.

We always appoint on merit, and we are open to discussing flexible working options.

We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Cluster Business Manager to support two secondary academies within our United Learning South East London Cluster. This is a hands‑on, operational leadership role, ideal for a proactive professional who enjoys being at the heart of school life while providing strong business and operational management.

Working closely with the Senior Executive Business Manager, you will help lead and manage a range of business functions across the academies, including finance, administration, facilities, health and safety, and data protection. You will deputise for the Senior / Executive Business Manager when required and play a key role in ensuring efficient, compliant, and high‑quality operational support that enables each school to focus on delivering excellent education.

About the Role As Cluster Business Manager, you will:

Play a visible, day‑to‑day operational role supporting the smooth running of both academies

Line‑manage finance, administration, and premises teams, developing high‑performing and motivated staff

Oversee financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance in line with United Learning requirements

Support HR processes, staff records, and safeguarding‑related compliance

Act as Data Protection Lead across both schools, coordinating SARs, FOI requests, personal data breaches, and ROPA, working closely with the Data Protection Officer for advice and guidance

Manage operational contracts and suppliers, including catering, cleaning, and facilities services

Support admissions processes and wider administrative functions

Ensure health and safety, risk management, and statutory compliance across both sites

Contribute to strategic planning, change management, and governance activity as required.

This role is split across two academies within the cluster and will require flexibility, strong organisational skills, and a willingness to respond to the practical needs of busy secondary schools.

About You We are looking for a professional who:

Has significant experience in school business management or a comparable senior operational role

Is confident managing complex operational responsibilities across multiple sites

Has strong financial and people‑management skills

Is highly organised, resilient, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment

Communicates effectively with senior leaders, staff, governors, and external partners

Shares United Learning’s commitment to exceptional standards, safeguarding, and continuous improvement

A relevant qualification in business or school business management is desirable, as is experience working within a multi‑school or trust environment, although transferable experience will also be considered.
