Engineering Technician – Dynamic Earth

Responsibilities

Conduct site visits, testing, and inspection services at construction job sites.

Conduct laboratory testing on soil samples (physical index properties, permeability and moisture‑density relationship).

Assist geotechnical engineers with site investigation activities such as soil borings, test‑pit excavations, field permeability/percolation tests, and other supporting tasks.

Pickup and drop‑off samples to laboratories.

Review and reference project documents including site‑civil, structural, architectural plans, geotechnical reports, and topographic surveys.

Conduct structural steel and steel reinforcement inspections.

Perform footing subgrade inspections to review soil composition and bearing capacity, determine depth of overexcavation for unsuitable subgrade soils, and oversee earthwork (monitoring overexcavation of unsuitable materials and compaction testing of structural fill material).

Communicate effectively with contractors and project managers.

Maintain instruments in calibrated condition, collect and report data to the manager, manage lab supply/inventory, and assist in preparation of reports and presentations.

Ensure that safety policies and procedures are followed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or construction‑related field preferred.

0–4 years’ experience in construction inspection or laboratory testing.

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate personal or company vehicle.

Hands‑on experience with metric and English tools.

Certifications such as ACI concrete field‑testing technician, accredited construction inspection/materials testing certificates, OSHA 40/10, and/or APNGA gauge training preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to understand general computer commands and learn supporting software for entering field data, laboratory data, timesheets, etc.

Independent and critical‑thinking abilities. Self‑starter who can work independently and with team members.

Physical Demands

Stand, sit, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use hands to finger, grasp, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; push or pull; talk and hear; use repetitive motions.

Frequently lift or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

Visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading and visual inspections of site plans.

Work Environment

Field inspections/visits dictated by construction schedules, may include early morning or late evening timing at the project site.

Indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

Majority of work week outdoors; walking on uneven surfaces in all weather conditions with exposure to animals, insects, plants, etc.

Hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, work on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or chemicals.

The salary range for this position is $19–$26 per hour.
