The City of Graham is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented individual to join our Utilities Department as a Utility Meter Technician. This position plays a key role in ensuring accurate water meter readings, maintaining customer accounts, and supporting the overall effectiveness of field operations.
General Statement of Duties Performs routine field, specialized technical and manual work in the collection of meter readings and field operations.
An employee in this class performs repetitive tasks related to the reading of water meters and assisting with the maintenance of customer accounts and meter assets. Employee is responsible for meter change outs, meter sets, and work/service orders. Following a strict schedule and assigned route, this employee drives a City vehicle and uses an electronic radio transmission device to collect readings as necessary. Operates a computer or tablet to communicate service orders to the water billing department and take photos of equipment for use in accurately establishing water services. This employee will deliver water readings to the water billing department and assist the staff in the monthly billing process. Employee will assist staff in maintaining the reading routes to keep them in a logical and efficient order. This employee will also assist field operations with various types of work including hydrant flushing, backflow testing, mowing, etc. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Field Operations Manager and is evaluated for accurate and timely completion of tasks.

Troubleshoots and provides routine maintenance and updates to the automatic reading system.
Operates City vehicle safely and efficiently; maintains City vehicle and submits requests for service as needed.
Connects and disconnects water services as directed.
Installs meters for new service and change outs.
Other Field Operations related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work in this position is medium work (exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. This employee must have the visual acuity to perform transcription and operate a vehicle. The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions that may include extreme heat and cold.
The position requires a valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License, completion of high school or equivalent, and some experience in an office environment requiring intense accuracy and timeliness, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Local government, utility, or water distribution experience is preferred.
The position is subject to the City’s cell phone reimbursement policy and therefore requires that the employee provide a data enabled phone for use in carrying out assigned duties.
