Under the general supervision of the Utility Billing Supervisor, the Meter Technician reads, inspects, observes, and records meter information into a handheld or lap top computer device vital to the operations and coordination of utility service and billing.
Must have good attendance including being at work on time regularly;
Responsible for recording data from water meters on assigned routes, entering data into hand held or lap top computer device;
Update And maintain a log of assigned routine work orders;
Makes special readings or re-readings as required;
Searches for leaks;
Activates or deactivates AMI meters and radios, according to work orders;
Determines that meters are functioning properly and reports any defects to supervisor;
Repairs damaged or malfunctioning meters or meter boxes as necessary;
Clears mud, debris and other foreign matter from meter cases;
Performs preventative maintenance to fixtures as necessary;
Locates and identifies water line routes and meters;
Detects, identifies, and disconnects illegal hook ups;
Notifies customers of problems with account payments, and/or of impending action to terminate services for non-payment of utility bills;
affixes locks to meters in cases of illegal hook ups or non-payment of outstanding service bills;
Respond to customer inquiries and complaints within the scope of knowledge and authority;
Promotes positive public relations;
Maintains contact with Cashiers and other City employees via phone and email.
All other duties as assigned.
Available to help Public Works in locating and fixing leaks.
High School diploma or GED;
0 – 6 months experience dealing with the public; alternately,
Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position; and
Valid Driver License issued by the State of Texas.
