Job Description With more than 11,000 employees, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi and a major contributor to the economic growth of Alabama. For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades.

Overview With surgical precision the Ingalls Pipe Welders seal together the vital piping networks supplying our ships their various chemicals, steam, ventilation, and heating and cooling systems. Our Pipe Welders are among the best in the world and stand out in their field. If you possess the talent, skill, ability or willingness to learn, you may have what it takes to become a valued team member.

An Ingalls Pipe Welder is responsible for performing pipe welding procedures on Stainless Steel and Copper‑Nickel pipe using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), also known as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. As with most positions in the shipyard, a Welder may be required to work either day or night depending on the number of ships under construction at any one point in time. Ingalls stresses the practice of working safely in all situations with safety procedures meeting, and most times, exceeding industry standards.

Types of metal materials with a variety of welding processes; the most basic of which are Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) also known as "stick welding" and Flux‑Core Arc Welding (FCAW) also known as "wire welding".
